Morey is the quintessential NBA cheapskate executive. If he didn't go to college Morey would probably be out on Saturday Mornings visiting garage sales and hunting for diamonds in the rough. Morey's ability to locate, hunt, and then capture his bargain is what separates from other GM’s. Not saying the other NBA executives don't do it also but no one to degree Morey does. First his system looks for talent (This may be Moreys biggest weakness but he uses his staff to help). Then Morey crunches numbers like no one else in the league to see how that talent really contributes. If they are a great offensive player but defensively they struggle what is their real contribution( a million times more in depth than that). Then Morey places a value on that player. Not what we are willing to pay them but what they are really worth. He probably has a list of every NBA player and a value next to them. He has a value for every free agent on the market. He has looked at those he thinks we have a shot to get and then determined which has the best value. Then Morey looks for bargains. He is always looking for bargains. You’ve heard Morey say Lebron is the best value in the league. It is because when you crunch Lebron’s numbers he’s off the charts better than anyone else. To pay Lebron only the Max is a steal. He is worth at least two- three times that on the court, not to even mention off the court how much additional revenue ticket sales etc he brings your team. Lebron =Great Value. Yao even injured is value because of the off court value he brings. Morey always lets the Market decide his RFA’s worth and then decides if it’s a bargain. For example Landry was a steal with that method. Morey will wait on Lowry and Scola the same way. When most teams are run around spending their MLE money in a frenzy. Morey waits for the bargains to reveal themselves and then pounces on them. Signing Landry for 3 million was a bargain. In the draft Morey is looking for value not to fill a role. If he can have both great but value is his first importance. Patrick Patterson was the best value. Signing Chase for 3 years at 750,000 per is a great value. Even in using the MLE Morey is looking for value. Example Morey said MLE signings usually turnout bad for teams because they are overpaying for what they get. But he felt Trevor Ariza would be a bargain. Scola was a bargain. Even Andersen was a value pick only having to use 5 million guaranteed over 2 years. Didn’t turnout as good as he had hoped but the investment was fairly minimal short term risk. Morey loves to stockpile value players. His system allows for the Rockets to accumulate assets and then trade those assets for players that fit better to what our team is trying to do. Using our Carl Landry chip to acquire Kevin Martin was a major plus for us. Carl Landry is a special talent but he is undersized for a PF and not the best defender. So we took that chip and turned it into martin. We traded Tmac for Jordan Jeffries and 2 firsts even that wasn’t the biggest robbery last season please tell me the other one. Morey is always looking to add more assets to our team… and Morey is always bargain hunting to take those assets and use them to acquire more value. You can bet Morey Morey has crunched the number on Chris Bosh and he sees him as a major value at the Max. Morey sees the chance to get Chris Bosh for some of our chips as a major opportunity. Morey will not overpay for Bosh is value. He already knows what he is willing to give. He also understands the NBA is a league of stars and stars win championships. So Bosh is plan A quite frankly because Lebron was not interested. If we get Bosh that will a coup for Morey and the Rockets but if we don’t so be it. Morey is always thinking ahead. You can rest assured he already has plan B, C, D, E etc. all mapped out. I n Morey we trust is a good motto and you can bet he is looking for a next bargain as you read this.
I've been saying the same damn thing for months. Morey is a vulture. This should be obvious to everyone by now. .
Morey hasn't signed Scola because he's holding out hope for a sign and trade. It is not a strategy to get value like Carl Landry's situation. Landry was coming off injury and was seen as an energy bench player. He didn't produce the numbers that Scola produced last year. The longer Morey waits on Scola the greater his salary will be.
@sportsguy33: Dumb panic money flying around as the 3 smartest GM's (Morey, Presti, Buford) sit there waiting to pounce on bargains. I love the NBA.
I think Morey realizes though that you can't win a championship with a team full of bargains. There are so few all stars that can lead and anchor your team out there that you need to acquire them at any reasonable price.
I wonder how the Morey lovefest can evolve if we get Bosh and perhaps more this offseason. I think you might as well rename this site to moreyfans.net.
Does anyone know where this line originated from? I hear it in the media a lot -- did it come from Clutchfans?
Yeah, but his task for this summer is to build a contender roster, don't forget it. We'll see what he does.
