I don't mean to start a discussion of the moderation here - but I am sure many of you visit other message boards as well. I visit another one, for frequent travelers, and there is a big discussion about moderation there - but there, they have like 50 moderators, and a few of them are former troublemakers who had long feuds with other members. Now that they have moderator powers, they use them to ban those members, etc. Also, moderators routinely go and edit/delete posts or whole threads when they are not offensive, instead of locking them. Here, I feel we have some sort of a benevolent dictatorship, that lets threads run their course, unless they become just unbearable, and I feel that our mods here have a good feeling for what is still ok and what is not - and they have everything under control. There, they now try to suppress any dissenting opinion. How is it at other message boards you visit? Are some of you moderators at message boards which have a lot of moderators? Any stories to tell? I would also be especially interested in guidelines for moderators, as you might have them at other message boards you either moderate or visit as a member (e.g., what is a reason for a ban, when should a thread be deleted, etc.). I have never had an issue with a moderator. If I did though I would cast a spell of invisibility on myself and quietly sneak out. Then they could not touch me with their +2 War Hammer.

I got booted from the very first message board I joined, God I wish I remembered the name , ever since I have learned that it is not say whatever you want and I usually lurk for awhile before posting on a board just to get the feel of what is allowed and what will get oyu the boot. /Clutchcity has the best mods anywhere
I was a mod at RealGM for a little while when I was a member of the organization. Because most of my BBS experience comes from here, I tried to moderate in a similar manner. Kept everyone accountable, didn't tolerate people jacking up my forum and whatnot (not that it was a lot of work -- afterall, i was handling their Rox forum, which was empty because everyone comes here). But, my fellow mods seemed to take the ESPN approach -- everything goes. I didn't see much mod misbehavior, but then I was there in the early days, before such animosities had a chance to form.
I've been banned multiple times from a bbs that a band I used to play with had. I kept coming back and trolling HARD. They finally had to shut it down because the only people posting were me (and my multiple "characters") and the other 3 guys in the band.
