I have to admit I never expected MoT to be an oft bandied name at the Trade Deadline. Vecsey, Ford, Indy Star, Boston all linked Mo with interest. (Unless they were all reading from the same bogus script?) MoT is the 2nd best 6th Man of the Year (behind Bobby Jax) IMO. He is unguardable. Mo is starting to play some D and even works for the occasional board. If his salary were just 'reasonable' he should be hotly sought. But his contract is terrible. Really terrible. Still has three years/26 or so mil left, if I am correct. So, if Maurice Taylor was truly marketable then I tip my hat to Mo and to CD for not making a bad deal (in the spirit of Danny Brat Ainge). I cannot believe I would say this, but I am glad he is a Houston Rocket. (Of course I liked Radmo/Barry for him.)
I am a big fan Mo T as well, he has a good touch offensively that not many players have. He may not start, but he gets starters minutes, and he deserves it.
Please tell me you're not thinking the Pistons are dumb enough to SnT Wallace to Houston for Taylor. Dumars is a whole lot smarter than that clown Billy Knight in Atlanta who gave away Wallace for a draft pick. Or didn't you know Billy Knight was the architect of the great Grizzlie teams before Jerry West got there?
In order for the Hawks to have unfettered cap space, this was probably the only deal they could do. If they were to do a sign and trade of Wallace, they would have to take back players of equal contract. I'm thinking they will make a hard go at Kobe. They will allow Kobe to pick the coach and players to play with him. My guess is that Kobe might take it if he has that kind of power. Kobe is a power-hungry player.
heh..and he gave away Shareef and Nazr and Theo and Dick as well. Mo Taylor has been outstanding. I really hope he wins co-6th man of the year with Bobby Jackson. I don't think he's getting much national recognition or respect..but that's okay! I love watching him come in and score! I expect to come in and start scoring from him nowadays! He has done very well! I love his outside shooting..and his pot game is just awesome. It's really like one of the best in the NBA. It's beautiful to watch..so nice. Just fantastic. And his defense has not been horrible..except against the Spurs. His rebounding has improved..don't y'all think so? I would still sign Troy Murphy or Mehmet Okur or Jamaal Magloire in the summer.
For that kind of money, he'd better be. Won't you love to dump MoT's contract and use the money to sign Mehmet or R. Wallace?
Charvo - If the Hawks think they have a shot at Bryant, they are even dumber than I thought. As for Bryant, he may be power hungry, but he's not stupid. Bryant would sign with the Clipps, not have to change his address and play with Jaric, Brand, Q and Maggette before he'd go to ATL. He'd force an SnT to West's Grizz before he'd go to Atlanta. There'd be a 3 way with him going home to Philly and Iverson going somewhere before he'd go to ATL. After paying Bryant $14+m, the Hawks have the following to build on: Alan Henderson...$8,273,125 Joel Przybilla.........$3,215,834 Chris Crawford......$3,250,000 Stephen Jackson...$1,100,000 Boris Diaw-Riffiod..$1,053,720 Total....................$16,892,679 C'mon....Stoudemire, Marion, Joe Johnson and Barbosa is light years ahead of ATL. With Bryant and the cast of characters I listed and whatever $14m could get them from a terrible FA crop, the Hawks would be lucky if they were ORL Lite.
As you point out, ATL is in trouble, big time. Look at Chicago as 'the model' for how to not get takers for free agent riches. (Forget SLC, they are unique.) It certainly seems to me that Atlanta should take contracts not grab cap space. Since they are unlikely to attract some talent they should acquire it out of the trades. It's midnight for Billy Knight.
I love seeing MoT getting his props on this board. He deserves WAY more respect for his game than most give him credit for around here. Not to mention, he probably gives the best interview out of all the Rocket players.
True.. MoT has some of the best quotes and does great interviews. I hope he wins 6th man of the year!! I wonder what we can do to help facilitate that! Mot has some of the sweetest post moves.. if he could only play defense and rebound better. its not even only about the rebounding I notice he doesnt box out well and then the guy he's guarding gets the offensive boards. Other than that his defense his ok. J
Tim Duncan would laugh at this line. MoT does well versus many 4s in the league, but TD always gives him fits. That might be one of the reasons we do poorly against the Spurs.
3.17.01 http://www.clutchfans.net/game.cfm?gameID=149 Maurice Taylor added 15 points on 6-13 from the floor. He, Kenny Thomas and Kelvin Cato combined to play terrific defense on Tim Duncan. ... the Rockets held him to 11-28 shooting, a number which was beefed up by Duncan's strong performance late against Cato. 12.3.01 Tim Duncan goes 8-21 in 43 minutes in a losing effort. 3.2.03 MoT goes 6-9 in 24 minutes. Timmy goes 7-14 in 39 minutes.
I like MoT well enough but I am curious about the deals that we were looking into for him at the deadline, such as for Croshere (more of a 3 point shooter) or for cap space (Chris Mills). Especially the latter deal, because we would have been without a power forward (well, Cato, OK, but still). I'm curious about whether acquiring Chris Mills would have been part of a larger deal. Not that I'll ever know, but the point is, while Mo is a great 6th man, we need a great starting power forward, especially in the West. And clearly JVG knows it. Or does he? Taylor for Croshere? I have a higher opinion of Croshere than many on this board---I think injuries and a case of White Man Out on Isiah's team contributed to his "disappearance" (although his contract is crap). Yep, Mo for 6th Man of the Year. Why not? But in the summer, he's trade bait, packaged with Steve.
I think a great center is more important than a great power forward. The west stacked up on PF's 'cause there were simply no great centers out there. The lure is someone who can plug the middle on defense and attract most of the attention on offense. A starting power forward who does that is redundant.
Mo T is a good player. But if you look at how much he makes, then he is underachieving. Same thing can be said about Cato.
when he comes into the game I get this ole' timey radio commercial playing in my head... I can almost hear it now... "Instant offense... just add a little Mo..."
I don't think he is underachieving. I think he is overpaid. I think he's a good "Instant 'O' " but the Rox have been deficient at defending the long 4s/at matching up against the good 4s since Sir Chuckles. Hey, maybe Eddie can -- oh, sorry, I forgot...
