If the Stros had offered it to them, the Yankees may have shied away from signing them. Yankees have refocused their organizational philosophy on preserving their draft picks and rebuilding their farm system.

From everything I've read about Derek Dietrich, it looks like a great pick in the 3rd round. If he ends up staying at the SS position, it would be a completely different look from Adam Everett, who seems to have been batting with a toothpick. I love his defense and have always defended his play, but he has to improve at the plate somewhat, unless they make something like a DF (designated fielder) position in the NL to counter the AL's DH spot.

what really makes no sense to me, if i understand the process correctly, is the indefinite amount of potential slots that can be available in the supplemental round between 1 and 2. why should every single other team in the league have to pay a penalty by having all their picks pushed down in the 2nd and subsequent rounds because of free agent signings that other teams make that have nothing to do with them? i guess the nfl has a similar deal.

can somebody explain to me the theory behind all this?

He's going to start at SS, but they hope him to make the transition to 3rd. If he can play SS well and hit with power, I think they should leave him there. There aren't many of those around...

Why wouldn't you rather have him play SS if he can hit period?

For everyone b****ing about the Astros not offering arb & losing picks, they stated before the draft that this gave them extra money to draft & overpay guys who fall because of signability concerns. They've already signed 1, a RHP who signed with USC.

They've also drafted a couple of 2-sport stars, OFs who signed to play DB at LSU & Ohio St.

These are guys they most likely would not have had the resources to sign if they were forced to pay out 1st/2nd round money. Just something to think about.

Because he might not be able to play SS long-term.

I like the 7th round pick. Russell Dixon, University of Auburn. He was the ballboy for my football team when I was in high school.

    I'm getting too old.

    Where are they now....

Drew Stubbs - continues to play in the Reds lower class A affilliate where he is hitting .250 with a .720 OPS.

Thank you for the thoughtful, intelligent reply. I think your crayons need sharpening.

In all seriousness, who ****ing cares about the past? I was talking about this year. They just signed a 20th round pick for 5th round money, so I'm not sure what your point is.

Is there anybody with leadership skills in the draft?

The Astros could really use someone who could rally the team.

Nope, I am serious. This clubhouse has no one to rally the troops.

In baseball, you don't draft for the needs of the current roster because it usually takes 3 years or more for a draftee to reach the majors.

Secondly, the problem with the Astros isn't lack of fire, it's lack of talent.

That will probably get all of the bad hitters they have to suddenly become good ones. Good idea.
