The two different types of players in differnt teams playing the same position.

Shaq got 17pts and 7 boards tonight.
    vs.
    Ming's 18pts and 8 boards.

    :D :D :D

Both of them will improve as the season goes on but I hope Yao can stay with just a little bit better numbers than Shaq.

Well Shaq only played 21 mins, as well as the fact that this was his first competitive game in over 5 months... Nonetheless, great game by Yao!

Isn't gonna happen, pards. Shaq is a dominant, historicly signifigant big man. Yao is a rookie that will not take over the league untill at least next year. Yao will have moments of greatness, but he can in no way go out and produce like Shaq day in, day out. This is just setting yourself up for a letdown.

Actually, the numbers are a bit comparable. Coming off an injury versus coming off being a rookie with very little practice. I'm not saying anything about who's better, but it's worth a consideration I think. If for nothing else but pondering.

Only problem is that Shaq played 23 minutes and has won 3 championships(and got dominated by the Rocks).

As far as a one-on-one matchup goes (I know you were just talking stats), it's interesting to note that the only player Shaq ever had true trouble scoring on was Gheorghe Muresan. Makes me wonder if another 7'6 300 pound guy who actually has skill might be able to slow him down effectively. Hey, one can dream, right?

Ahh!! Stop this crap... Yao is no match for Shaq for now... and we all know that...

Even though both are playing center, however each have a different style of play...

Yao Ming is Yao Ming, and Shaq is Shaq...

I wished Yao didn't have to play Shaq three times this year, but Yao is a man and I see trouble coming in the next game with LA. Shaq is going to be looking to hurt Yao IMO. I hope not.

maybe we can start Cato @ 4 and guard Shaq at the defensive end. Yao then compete w/ Shaq at the other end of court.

This is what I was thinking but for some reason CATO seems to be back in Rudy's doghouse.

Everyone look out ! Is it Einstien? Nitsche? Socrates?

NOOOOOOoooooooo..... it's KwikyMart, the famous basketball philosopher.

KwikyMart, Oh Great One, thank you for imbibing your wisdom into our feeble minds. We are honored with your presence. Before your geneus insight, we all thought that Shaq is Yao Ming and Yao Ming is Shaq!!!!!!!!!!. We now know the TRUTH.

    Just kidding, dude.

That said, ya never know what'll happen 'till the game's played. Shaq'll try to be the omnipotent force and "tough guy" Yao. I'll bet Yao will play a smart game.... keep Shaq out of the paint, try a few jump hooks, etc. No way Yao's gonna be blocking Shackdaddy or trying his little dipsy-do-da reverse layin move with Shackdaddy in the paint.

I think Shaq repects Yao and would not jurt him. But when Yao does play Shaq later this season for the first time it is going to be war, and I think Shaq will come out on top.

Yea, but if my first impressions are correct, Ming seems to save something for big games.

Shaq's so strong and quick I think he's going to win the position and perhaps the scoring wars. But Ming is surprisingly quick himself. He'll not physically overpower Shaq but I see him scoring on the guy.

He was scoing on the Bradley/Nowitski double team, I think he'll score on Shaq too.

    Shaq>YM>>>Bardley

In a play of mavs game, YM played physical against Bardley and bump him aside, then score. The same thing will happen with YM being bump aside and Shaq score. YM is no physical match to Shaq.

BTW, I think YM's turn around jumper will still work over Shaq, even though the percentage may go down.

I agree with you guys that Yao is no match for Shaq. But I also believe that Yao will have his numbers also. Yao has an extremely high baskbetball IQ. Yao has no chance backing Shaq down in the low-post. We all know that Yao has a tremendous outside game. He'll back off from Shaq and take his open Shots, and make like 70% of them. Then the lakers will have to adjust and make Horry guard Yao. Rockets will counter-attack and make Ming take Horry down-low. We all know that Horry cannot contain Young Ming. All in All, Ming will have his numbers just as Shaq will.

    You guys are paranoid.

I hate Shaq as much as anyone, but do you really think he's out there to be a thug and hurt people? Shaq could hurt anyone in the league if he wanted to. Ming respects Shaq, and from the quotes Shaq respects him. If Shaq was the kind of player to do that, don't you think he would do it against Tim Duncan, Chris Webber, Vlade Divac, etc.?

Yao will still score on fast breaks and will get some offensive rebounds and dunk them in. But if Yao is to stop Shaq, YAo needs to practice is hook shot because Shaq will not beable to stop that move.

I would've said that before the season, but who knows with Yao now? He continues to surprise us...

I think Cato and Yao on the floor at the same time would give shaq fits..but right now Shaq would eat Ming alive in the paint.I think Ming will still get off his points because he plays so smart.

I think next year we'll see some good battles between Yao and Shaq.I hope Yao stays over during the off-season and works on his game and upper body strength.I know it's very early but has anything been mentioned about what he'll do between seasons ?

Actually Ming had a better game than Shad last night. Shad shot only 8-13 with no assist nor BS while Ming 7-11 to go with 2 assist and 4 BS.

Having said, Ming is no match for Shad because last night was just the first night Shad came back from injury. Just like the first night Ming was adjusting for the league.

On the other hand, Ming can compete with Shad at the same level with different skill if Rocket designs smart play for Ming against Shad. Ming can fade away, hook shot and jump shot to pull Shad out of hix circle on the offence. On the defence, however, Ming need help to guard against Shad.

    :)
