I know a lot of ClutchFans want us to make the big splash and a sign a top FA (Ron Artest, Gilbert Arenas, etc...), but would do not have the cap space for those guys nor will they play for cheap. I think an UFA like Pietrus would be perfect for our system. An athletic swingman that can defend and shoot the three, plus he is not afraid to take it to the basket. He has been buried in Don Nelson doghouse so he is not highly thought of. I wanted to know what you guys thought, since I have not seen his named mentioned.
Out of the people who we actually could sign, Pietrus is probably my favorite. Morey wants to get shooters who can slash and defend - Mickael fits the bill.
If we can trade Battier for a pure offensive piece (long shot, but someone like a Michael Redd, or Vince Carter), then Pietrus would be a great signing. He'd give you a little bit of everything (scoring, passing, rebounding, defense, etc.) If we're going to still have Battier next year, I'd prefer Ricky Davis. Ricky won't give you anywhere near the defense or athleticism, etc. but is still clearly a much better scorer, imo. And scoring off the bench is what we sorely need, in the scenario where Battier is still here.
you haven't seen his name mentioned here? he's in lots of convos and a few sigs, as well. personally, I am NOT a fan of his. his shot selection is abhorrent (though that could be a function of gsw bball). his defense is on ufo-status (heard about em, but haven't seen em). his passing is subpar, too. all I see with pietrus is the small forward version of stromile swift. very athletic body, very disappointing game. factor in that he complained to the media in cali about wanting to be a focal point in gsw offense (where everyone jacks and he isn't near the player baron or jack are), and i'll definitely pass.
His name was mentioned several times on this board. Yes we can have him but it depends on Landry's contract. If Pietrus asks for more than 3m/y, which I think he will, he has little chance to be a rocket.
I apologize for saying that I have not seen his name mentioned, but compared to some of the others that we have no chance at, his name as not been mentioned.
3 guard? What is this 3 guard of which you speak? I've heard rumors of a 1 guard and a 2 guard, but a 3 guard??? On topic: I'm under the impression that league opinion on Pietrus is low. Economically, when total demand decreases, the price decreases as well. Maybe Lord Morey can land him with his crazy magic?
agreed. I still don't fully comprehend the pietrus infactuations. I know he's oversized and athletic, and those are areas we've been hurt by in the past. unfortunately, his low bbiq negates those positives. bad shots bad defense bad passing bad comments 2 media (maturity...although he could've learned from it...dunno) either way I definitely prefer barnes, too. plays within himself, good shooter, and prob will be cheaper than pietrus.
Just say no to Ricky Davis. I wouldn't mind Pietrus, but I kinda agree that he might have the Stromile Swift disease. How else can you explain his lack of production given that he is so athletic and can shoot from the outside. A cheaper, also reasonable option could be his teammate, Azubuike. He sure has improved since his first tour of duty here.
I think Azubuike is a product of fitting in nicely with GS system. We have had him before, and if he did not fit then why would he know. Our core is still the same, unlike someone as Posey where we have a totally different team. Only Yao and Steve were here with him his half-year stint. But once again, why would Posey leave a championship team and come to Houston when he has left once before. He could have resigned the first time. When I mentioned Pietrus, it was because he is someone we have a chance at signing, not just wishful thinking.
I agree. It all depends on what we end up doing with the 2/3 spots and especially with Battier. If we keep Battier you want a scorer like a Ricky Davis coming off the bench to contrast Battier's defense and shooting. If we dealt Battier for a Vince Carter type then you want a Pietrus, Posey or even a Quinton Ross type coming off the bench as your defensive specialist.
Barnes or Pietrus could probably be had for around 4 yrs, $18 - $20 million. Last year we had problems with bigger guards. This would help us tremendously. Or we could've just drafted CDR instead of Dorsey.
kelenna did fit the first time around. jvg labored over the decision to cut him, but it was simply a #s game. jeff said it though: (paraphrase) "this kid can play and deserves to be in the league". ricky davis is cancerous. STAY AWAY. james posey would be excellent, but I don't see him leaving boston. I was for keeping him when he was here before. as soon as he made a fundamental change in his j (going to more of a set shot w/quicker mechanics) I knew he was a keeper. alas, carrol dawson's brilliant tweek blossomed elsewhere.
