Michigan's the winningest program in the history of college football... it's still one of the premier coaching jobs in the country.

think he was an assistant at mich. i dont see it working...i was worried miles would go there, they need a proven guy, winning at ball state and san diego....come on.. does hoke run a spread offense? if not it could take 3 years just to get the players and system installed...

Jim Tressel came from Youngstown State before going to Ohio State. Bob Stoops was a defensive coordinator before OU. Urban Meyer came from Bowling Green and Utah before Florida. Together, they are three of the most successful coaches in the country and none were remotely proven at the big-league levels when they got top-tier jobs.

The benefit of coaching at places like SDSU or Bowling Green is that you prove that you can coach without having the huge talent advantages you get at the big schools.

true...i actually wasnt a fan of the tressel hire initially either for this very reason. so hit and miss. just like rich rod did so well in big east...comes to the big 10 and cant do jack. the pressure at michigan is something fierce too. not that florida, OU arent...but theres something different with michigan. hell, if hoke wins 8-9 games a year, but cant beat OSU he'll be run out of town.

    Agreed.

1st tier: USC, Florida, Texas, Ohio St, Alabama, Oklahoma.

2nd tier: Michigan, Nebraska, Miami (FL), UGA, Tennessee, Auburn, Oregon...

    LSU - 1st or 2nd tier?

If LSU was 1st tier, they wouldn't almost lose a coach to Michigan

Not necessarily...being a proud alumn and wanting to turn your school around can have a big effect on some people. I would consider LSU a 1st tier program due to the resources and recruiting base they have.

As for as Hoke goes, I don't think Les was the guy to turn Michigan around but this is a very underwhelming hire IMO. They haven't been good in a long time and I thought they needed a proven HC that could also be considered a little bit of a "splash" hire.

Dennis Franchione vountarily went from Alabama to A&M... coaching moves don't always have to make sense. :)

but $$$$$$ always makes sense, $2,000,000 a year was unheard of back then

I don't know Brady Hoke or his credentials but you can never underestimate a coach just because they don't have a big name or a proven track record. They all start somewhere and once they have success at a big time school ala Michigan that's when and where they make a name for themselves.

When Oregon hired Chip Kelly as the successor nobody outside of New Hampshire knew who he was. Hell people in NH probably didn't even know who he was.

    His track record so far...

    1st year- Rose bowl
2nd year- NC game and coach of the year.
