I'm kind of surprised the ref let them take the kick before the defense was ready.

The ref gives them the clear before the kick. It doesn't matter if the wall is still moving.

I know, but usually the ref doesn't allow the play to restart until the defense is set up, otherwise you'd see a lot more plays like that.

opposing players sometimes shift the line and remove move players around to adjust to which kicker is going to take the kick. You don't get to see the whole play from the time the start. In this video you see the line set and they shift and fail :p

not true at all. if a player (messi) asks for 10 yards that's all the ref cares about. movement outside of 10 yards is irrelevant and most good refs understand that. if a player doesn't ask for 10 yards you can immediately take the restart so long as the ball is still.

usually if it is a legit shot at goal you will always ask for 10 because the defense will stand right against the ball to slow/stop play. that's why you don't see more plays like that.

i've seen several goals scored when the gk was still lining up his wall.

on this play, the gk can blame his teammates. one of them should be standing in front of the ball while he is setting up the wall. even if he gets a yellow so be it.
