How does Windows XP home edition do when compared with, say, Windows ME? I have ME running on my machine right now, and it leaks like a sieve. I've been contemplating either Windows XP or Windows 2000. At the moment I think I'm going to give XP a try, because I can get it a little cheaper than 2000. (May regret that decision later.) I'm not really wanting to sink a lot of money into my current machine, just a few stop-gap measures that will allow me to get a little more use out of it until I can buy the laptop I want.
Windows 2000 and Windows XP are based upon the NT Kernel which doesn't suffer that horrible memory leaking problem that the Win95/Win98/WinMe do. If you are considering WinXP Home vs Windows 2000 - take Windows 2000, a lot of people just don't like XP right now. I like WinXP Pro though, it is what I use at home/work. I think it is a mix of the good features of WinME and Windows 2000. Besides you can make XP Pro act/look just like Windows 2000 Pro. Differences between WinXP Home and WinXP Pro. When you switch to Windows 2000 or higher - it will seem like night and day from the crappy Win9X/Me junk.
Though I have never used Windows ME and I am not a big fan of Microsoft, I find it hard to believe that the OS "leaks memory like a sieve". Are you sure that the leak is not coming from some application that you are running? I currently, use Windows 2000 Professional and literally months can go by without rebooting.
