Fri Oct 8 2004 - With Bob Sura out with a back injury, Jim Jackson could be the starter at shooting guard. Even so, his charge won't be scoring, but guarding opposing shooting guards. Tracy McGrady will run the point, and most of the offense will go through him and Yao Ming.

Where in the heck did they get the info that T-Mac would run the point?

I guess he could but do we really want him to? I don't think he fits the VanGundy mold of a point at all. Perhaps they were talking point forward and not point guard.

this is just one of the dumbest things i ever heard (well, actually read). tmac will start at sg.. no doubt about it. its either ward/lue who will start at point. jj will start at sf. plain and simple. i dont know if this writer had a dose of writer's block or he's just running out of topics to talk about or doesn't know any rockets basketball......

I hope TMac plays some at the Point. I'd even support the idea of him being a 30+ minute/pg PG.

McGrady it doesnt matter if he's playing small guard or point guard. He will be holding the ball the majority of the time anyways once the ball reaches half court. He probably has better court vision than some of the other point guards we have. He is a vanguard player.

My pet peeve... the thought that moving players out of position will somehow help create mismatches. Journalists love to do it. We love to do it. How many times have you seen this on our BBS:

    C-Mutombo
    PF-Yao
    SF-Howard
    SG-Jackson
    PG-McGrady

...as if rearranging what you call players will somehow improve the team.

So you're saying that the NBA isn't about matchups?

My pet peeve is that people don't recognize that there are reasons players play certain positions. You may get an advantage in one way, but it is usually outweighed by a disadvantage that is created by the same move.

Most coaches would have already made the move if they believed an overall advantage would occur.

McGrady will probably be the primary ballhandler in the half-court. There's no reason he should be taking it up the court, though, since there are better pure ballhandlers on the team.

all that means is he will bring up the ball a lot. we all knew that already.

ward and jj will start in the backcourt. they are there for defense and hitting open shots. tmac will bring the ball up and start a 2-man game between him and yao.

By playing the point, I'm pretty sure they mean playing the point guard's role... Setting up the offense, providing dribble penetration, setting up teammates, etc. I don't think they literally mean he'll be guarding PGs (though he can, if need be).

Its not a horrific idea but I would prefer a Lue/Ward combo at the PG spot and just allow TMac and Yao as our designated scorers...extra ballhandling and defensive duties will only wear out McGrady even more, especially since he'll be playing a load of minutes...

The Rockets are not looking to shake up every position, this year...Jim will remain at the 3 spot and T-Mac will be at the two spot. Some one else will be at the point guard like Lue/Ward

T-Mac was running a few of the plays at the "open practice," so I reckon it's plausible.

I prefer Ward at this position any day, He is a Scoring Guard not a point...
