It isn't that simple, at least to most people. There is more to it than just picking a woman with certain policy positions and family background. To the American public, Palin is a complete unknown from a tiny state who's gonna have to convince people she can handle being President of the United States if called upon. For a huge chunk of people, that's a very tough sell in 60 days. Not saying she can't do it. But like Obama, the public is going to have to get to know her.

But sadly, it is that simple to a lot of people.

Man, McCain is out of his mind! I honestly thought there could be nothing more hilarious than a McCain/Huckabee ticket. I stand corrected.

I think you guys need to look at history- nobody votes for a president because of their vice-president. The only election where the selection of a vice president actually positively impacted the election was the 1960 Presidential election with JFK selecting LBJ and adding Texas to the Democrats tally. Otherwise, the vice-presidential choices that are important are the ones that hurt campaigns. This trooper-gate thing has a good chance of turning Palin into the 2008 Thomas Eagleton.

The McCain camp panicked, didn't vet her probably and are going to have to deal with this crap, or pick another VP quickly.

McCain won't pick another VP because that would be the equivalent of conceding that he has bad judgment. An event like that could turn the election into a landslide.

Unbelievable - the more I learn the more I am astonished. Earlier today I thought this was a brilliant move by McCain....

But now seeing her lack of experience and this probe - where people caught on tape showing that Palin was not happy that the trooper wasn't getting fired!!!! How could she not have been vetted.

Worse than if it turns out against her - is that is shows McCain lacks judgement in choosing his VP, that he pandered and made a choice to pick someone who would try to get him female voters and appeal to disgruntled hilary voters (talk about putting getting elected first over patriotism)......wow, this is going to hurt McCain.

It's unfortunate. But it is reality.

Not a chance. I've said it before. She fired (tried to reassign, but he refused) a bureaucrat who refused to fire her brother-in-law whose abuses of power would put him in jail in 49 states. Whether it broached some made-up ethic or not, it was the right thing to do.

Although I hope the Democrats bring it up. She'd win points for telling the story.

I don't think the story has legs either but it may not go away soon. The Dems will obviously make sure it gets plenty of discussion sooner or later.

    LOLOLOLOLOL.

MCAIN is desparate. he can no longer use the Obama is inexperienced attack anymore. This woman has LESS EXPERIENCE than Obama and YOUNGER than Obama.

These guys are lacking confidence. They had to do something with some shock value...and it worked cuz people are talkin about it today.

GET THE HELL OUTTA HERE. THERE ARE WAY BETTER PEOPLE THAN HER.

Specifically why Obama should have been a VP, not a POTUS candidate.

We're voting for POTUS first, VP second.

Obama has never run anything. Palin has run a city and a state.

    Nice try.

wtf? we're not voting for her? SHE'S GONNA BE 2ND IN LINE TO BE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES...you're basically saying it wouldnt matter who are vice president is....we're voting for her as much as we are voting for McCain.

It's obvious McCain is desperate. Even the most hardcore republican can admit to that. What's his big thing? Obama has NO experience....yet he picks someone with even less experience than Obama? Someone YOUNGER than Obama. It doesnt add up.

And cmon.......she ran ALASKA for less than 2 years...

When I first heard McCain picked Sarah Palin to be his VP, my first reaction was who the hell is she??? After watching the pundits debate his choice on several channels tonight though, one thing is abundantly clear. Any attack on her inexperience to be Vice President seems to elicit a response about the relative inexperience of Barack Obama running for President. This is a snowball the Dems do not want to see roll too far down the hill so my advice, stay away from the Sarah Palin inexperience card.

This morning when I woke up and read the name, all I could think of honestly was Michael Palin. Honestly, I knew nothing about her. I was kind of warming up to her and her, especially with all the positive coverage on her personality and personal story. It was kind of refreshing.

Now, I've just been reading how Palin was primarily championed to McCain by the James Dobson/Richard Land/militant-religious camp. From what I can read Ms. Palin is a big Pentacostalist/Fundamentalist/Intelligent Design type and her primary apeal is to big bible belt fundimentalist religious interests. Here are a couple of articles:

Richard Land's VP Advice to McCain: Pick Sarah Palin

What is Sarah Palin’s religion and why does it matter?

Intelligent Design and the Alaska Governor's Race

Political fundamentalism is a big red flag for me. Of course, it is probably a big plus for some of the party faithful who were not keen on McCain, and her selection has drawn endorsements from Phyllis Schlafly and Dobson, among others who were sitting back.

I bring this up because I just hadn't seen this discussed heretofore. The personal info is certainly compelling and nice, but to me, if what I’ve been reading is right, I don’t think this is some panic move, and I don't think that she will be very popular with the Democratic side going forward, in spite of the fact that she maybe seems like a bit of an outsider and a fresh face.

This appears to be a move to pull in the people who weren't keen on McCain's credentials as a hardcore ideological/social conservative (reactionary). From what I am reading, she actually really scares me ideologically.

I think the trooper thing was probably vetted pretty closely by McCain before selecting her, so I don't think anything will come of it. The more closely I look, the more I become convinced that this wasn't some random/panic move like many Dem's first reactions seem to be, but rather was an under the radar and well thought strategic move for the hardcore religious element of the party who were unexcited about McCain. But I think there are many things more important and relevant to be concerned about (if you aren't a James Dobson disciple) when it comes to Palin.

It is very interesting to me that Palin was the chairwoman of the Alaska Oil & Gas Conservation Commission.
