Frankly, I hate the Mavs but never hurts to assess what our competitors are up to. Carlisle did what he could with what he was given. Cuban appreciated Carlisle being a good soldier and not complaining about the lack of quality players. http://espn.go.com/dallas/nba/story...rlisle-agrees-new-deal-coach-dallas-mavericks The lone championship coach in the Dallas Mavericks' 32-year history isn't going anywhere. Rick Carlisle has agreed to a new contract that will keep him in charge for a fifth season and beyond. "We are excited that Rick will be back with the Mavericks for at least the next four years," Mavericks owner Mark Cuban said in a statement. "He is a proven winner, a great teacher and a coach that will help the Mavericks improve as a team and as an organization." Carlisle's current four-year contract was set to expire at the end of June. He guided the Mavs to the 2011 NBA championship, defeating the Miami Heat in his third season with the team. Carlisle is 198-114 with Dallas. The Mavs are coming off a 36-30 record and a first-round sweep at the hands of the Oklahoma City Thunder.
Cuban's too smart to let a quality coach walk away. They're going to have a good coach in place when they do finally cash in their cap space money.
Obvious move. The drama will be what happens to the Mavs roster now that Dirk, Shawn Marion and Brendan Haywood are the only ones certain to return.
Mostly obvious move. If Cuban had gotten cute about extending and trying to save some money, I could have seen another team overpaying to get him in the free market, but there aren't that many quality teams looking to change coaches. Maybe the Lakers. They can't be happy with Brown, and they would spend the money for a top coach. The Clippers would benefit, but Sterling is too cheap. And I don't think the Heat are willing to give up on Spoelstra. Same for the OKC Thieves and Brooks. I'm very curious to see the Mavs roster on opening night and at the trading deadline next year.
When the Rockets snatched up McHale and locked him up, you knew it was only a matter of time before Cuban responded.
