The sentence you 'quoted' does not exist on the link you provided.

    from the page:
    http://change.gov/americaserves/

The Obama Administration will call on Americans to serve in order to meet the nation’s challenges. President-Elect Obama will expand national service programs like AmeriCorps and Peace Corps and will create a new Classroom Corps to help teachers in underserved schools, as well as a new Health Corps, Clean Energy Corps, and Veterans Corps. Obama will call on citizens of all ages to serve America, by setting a goal that all middle school and high school students do 50 hours of community service a year and by developing a plan so that all college students who conduct 100 hours of community service receive a universal and fully refundable tax credit ensuring that the first $4,000 of their college education is completely free. Obama will encourage retiring Americans to serve by improving programs available for individuals over age 55, while at the same time promoting youth programs such as Youth Build and Head Start.

Is this not the same page?

The service isn't mandatory for everyone. It is a chance to serve in exchange for tuition money. It's a great idea. It's too bad basso didn't understand that it wasn't mandatory.

Did they change it. I don't see the quote.

I guess Obama's people are reading this BBS. The sentence basso highlighted was indeed there earlier today.

Obama wants people to serve their communites and Bush wanted people to go to the mall. Already a clear difference between these two.

That's a really great payout. Only 100 hours for $4000 tax credit. That's $40/hr. Since it's a tax credit and not wage, it's about $50/hr at a real job. That's an AWESOME payout for a broke college student!

100 hours in a year is equivalent to volunteering only 1 day per month(8 hours * 12 months=96 hours). It doesn't even use up that much time.

It might be only a Houston or Texas thing. It's what a CPA told me at a charity that I worked with. I wonder if she meant it was was for a CPA organization.

We can't ensure the course of our political movement if we don't start a young communist league.

yes, the change.gov site has changed. the google cache of the old wording is still around however.

there was a fair amount of this type of airbrushing on the obama site during the campaign.

Sounds like a fantastic plan to me.

President Obama might not be forcing them but I will be forcing my kids to do it so that their first year of college is paid for. ;)

Jeez, get over it guys. Here's the entire page on this topic...

Notice the first thing on the page is a quote by Obama.

Notice the quote says will call on Americans not will demand all Americans.

Notice it says expand national service programs and not require national service programs.

Notice it says Obama will call on citizens of all ages to serve America and not Obama will order all citizens of all ages to serve America.

There are also words like encourage and promoting and absolutely nothing that would support the meaning of basso's original (and by that, I only mean first, not creative) post.

The only way you get mandatory is through a deliberate misreading and a desire to put some twisted, personally satisfying political position over country.

basso, Obama's president. Get over it.

Bribing people with taxpayer money to do community service. Great idea, Obama.

I thought he was going to balance the budget. Now he decides to pay people for volunteering.

Great idea. A positive way to teach the value of community service and instill a since of pride in being an American.

I think Basso is worried he is going to get an email one morning that reads...

"Effective Immediately: Mr. Basso please report to the cotton-fields for Orientation. This is a Mandatory." signed, "Your Loving President, Barack"

    Good point.

While we are at it, I can't believe the Army bribes people with tax payer money to perform their service. What is our country coming to?

if you'd read the whole thread, you'd see that Obama, or someone on his team, changed the wording.

so your point, and very large fonts are irrelevant.
