Well, it looks like the guy who should be the number 1 FA option for the Rockets is opting out.

Other than PG, this is our biggest need.

Can the Rockets make a run?

    Here is the article....

    Maggette Will Opt Out Soon

    Jun 11, 2008 9:48 AM EST
Clippers' guard Corey Maggette will officially opt out of his contract at the end of the month, according to The Los Angeles Times.

He will become an unrestricted free agent, with teammate Elton Brand having the same option.

Coach Mike Dunleavy still believes that both will be playing for the team next season.

"The reality is that there's no money out there," Dunleavy said of the market value for free agents. Later, he added, "People will come to reality and probably make a deal. That's how I see it."

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------

Would he take less money to play for a winner?

Come on Battier, use your Duke Aura to lure him here...

    Good finisher...GREAT free throw shooter....

    The question is:

Is he a consistent enough mid-range and outside shooter for Morey's liking?

    I say do it.

Even if Maggette doesn't sign here, I hope he leaves the Clippers. He's too good to be put on the backburner by such a pathetic team.

I hate his jumper but he banged that thing down at a 38% clip last season.

He is unrestricted, so he could sign a one year MLE with a player option for year 2 and 3 if he likes.

So he could opt out and become an UFA again.

I thought we were planning on signing Landry with the bulk of the MLE?

Even so, Maggette will want more than the MLE, our only hope is a SnT IMO.

I seriously doubt Landry gets that much, Morey is just scaring off other teams...IMHO.

He would be perfect coming off the bench and a good back-up for if/when one of our stars go down.

maybe but right now the rockets aren't winners.

He may go for the most money, but I can see him taking a little bit less money to go play for a team where he would have a bigger role. He was miserable on the clippers coming on and off the bench. Maggette is a legit NBA starter, he has some recent injury woes but if he is back 100% next year the guy is a consistent 18ppg scorer, good rebounder and gets to the line as much as anyone else in the league. But he had his run-ins with Dunleavy regards his PT and the constant trade rumors involving him.

Not sure what teams have the space to sign him for more than the MLE but no way he is going to come to houston for less than market value only to be on the bench behind tmac/battier (yes i do believe battier is more valuable to the team as a starter). and even if he does start he is going to be the third option at best. Ideally he would be the perfect guy coming off the bench, the scoring punch like ginobili for the spurs, but thats not going to happen.

Only way that he comes to houston is this way.
That would leave us without landry :(
But for maggatte I would do it in a heartbeat.
I can live with scola and hayes at the 4 as long as my wings are tmac maggette and battman

    Thanks for the news, DaDa!

If we can get the Landry signing taken care of, this should definitely be the Rockets next goal.

Maggette will be looking for near-max money...he's been chained to that near-MLE salary for too long.

I'd say sign and trade...but basically Yao, Maggette and Tracy would take up about $50 mill...which is like 95% of the salary cap. I'm not saying it's impossible...but the odds are a bit long. That's a lot of salary commited to three players.

As for Maggette signing for the MLE...I doubt it. And if he does want to "play for a winner" and take the cut, why sign for Houston for the MLE when he can sign with say...LA or New Orleans or even Boston. Damn. Those teams would be invincible.

I haven't read your other responding comments, but I am curious where Maggette is going to match or beat his current contract? If he opts out then he can still receive an SnT, but if that is the direction then what do you give up?

Ross (as well as Livingston) are also 'out there' from Clips. Particularly if (when? Where, Portland?) Shane is traded Ross is a guy who could fit in quite well.

The 'new look' (Part 36?) LAClips will, or will not, be led by All-Star and recovering Elton Brand with Cat, Kamen and thousands in casts and/or other cities?
