    Rockets summary

    Maddox absent

Rockets guard Tito Maddox skipped the team's trip to San Antonio, an unexcused absence that had team officials wondering through the night about his health and whereabouts.

Rockets vice president and trainer Keith Jones did speak with Maddox on Thursday, but after missing the team's charter following Wednesday game, Maddox also skipped a commercial flight on Thursday without giving a reason for his absence.

Maddox did not return a message on Thursday and was unavailable for comment. His agent, Dan Fegan, also could not be reached.

"We called four or five times last night and called this morning," Jones said. "We heard from the agent. He got him a flight. But he (Maddox) never got on the flight. The first thing is you worry maybe something happened to him. But he called to say he's OK. I said we're getting ready for a game, and we'll talk (today)."

"We've got to talk to him first and find out why. I talked to him on the phone. He's alive. He's breathing. Nobody had a gun to his head. He's OK. But obviously there is another reason. We told him we would sit down and find out why."

The Rockets did not deny that Maddox's absence bothered them, particularly before they knew he wasn't hurt or sick.

"It's definitely a distraction," forward Maurice Taylor said. "Tito is one of my good friends on this team, one of my young guys. We always kick it together. Whenever someone does something like that, it's inexcusable.

"He's a friend of mine. I'm not the person to judge him. But at this particular time of the season, this is not good for anybody."

Maddox was activated from the injured list on Wednesday but did not play. A rookie second-round pick from Fresno State, he has played just 31 minutes this season.

"The guys are a little bit let down," Jones said.

Hope its nothing serious he could just be sick of watching moochie sucking it up every night. He has to be thinking "man this guy sucks" how could he not. I personally wouldnt mind seeing what Tito can do its hard to picture him worse than moochie.

This guy's prior problems helped push Tark the Shark into retirement. Look for him to go the way of "Two Sandwiches."

Someone on the Rice U. board heard his exchanges with other players when he was in college. Sorry, the guy is a punk. No class. Even if he is on our team. :(

I hope it isn't some addiction problem as I think he defintely has the potential to be a rotation player for us.

Me too. I'm thinking a decent 2guard to replace Cat when he is tired. I was voting for him to come in instead of Moochie in last nights game and the game against the Lakers. Maybe he'll give us a spark. Derek Fisher and the Lakers couldn't look at the scouting report on him because he has none! :)

Going by here-say is not good. You dont know him, you dont know whats going on with him. Why be so negative when you dont know his situation. Judge a person by your own experience with him/her, not by someone else's....

I know what you guys are thinking. I thought that too. But thats probably not it. maybe the dude just drank a little too much and had a bad hangover and slept in. thats probaly not it either. its probably nothing, it happens to us all every once and while, he'll be back and all will be well.

I don't know why anyone would jump to the conclusion its got to with substance abuse. And I echo the sentiments above re: the Rice board. I heard some pretty unflattering stuff (re: locker room behavior) about C. Drexler from better sources than that and I continue to be a fan. Calling him a punk based on second hand, overheard conversations just seems silly.

On an unrelated topic, my theater company requested a donation from the Rockets for a silent auction at our upcoming benefit and they pledged an autographed poster of Tito. You gotta figure that's worth a lot.

He needs to get more playing time instead of Mooch. I'm almost convinced last year was a fluke for Moochie.

this is the first time i've heard "gay player" comments about anyone apart from steve & cat (w the odd yao/jealousy line thrown in)... all i have to say is leave Colin Pine out of Tito's problems! :D

I think he meant the bench. Not Colin Pine.

Incidentally, where is this Rice U. board?

With regard to Maddox, it sounded like the coaches felt he had an understandable excuse for missing the plane, although they still fined him. Hopefully that was the case.

Whether it's Maddox, a draft pick, trade or a revived Moochie, I hope the Rockets can seriously upgrade at the third guard spot this season. We need someone who can support Steve and Cuttino badly.
