Unbelievable. You'd think after being b****-slapped by Stoops and co. by a total of 71 points over the last three years, Mack would make an attitude adjustment. This is part of the article that Mack's press secretary, Bill Little, put out this morning. Some of the quotes in this make me sick to my stomach. Maybe he just doesn't get it. Maybe he doesn't mind taking it in the ass every year from the Stoops brothers. The spin machine is in full effect at Belmont Hall. http://www.mackbrown-texasfootball.com/pages/billcommentary/004/little_080303_20.html One of the more significant points concerned a growing change in attitude that seemed evident about the Texas-Oklahoma game and rivalry. It was clear that more and more of the media seemed to be getting the message that the game isn't about one team "losing," it is more about two great teams battling in the showcase arena of the national college football spotlight. "This has been a great football game between two really good football teams for the last two years," Brown said. "I don't think we have gotten enough credit for the way we've played in the game, and I don't think Oklahoma has gotten enough credit for winning the game. People have seemed to be focused on us losing, rather than recognizing that Oklahoma has done a great job in winning." Where the Oklahoma game was once dropped from the top tier of games televised by national networks, it has returned to the highest of profiles. It's among the featured games by the network of college football's Bowl Championship Series (ABC) and has been a stop on the popular touring show ESPN GameDay the past two years. There were, of course, the usual varying approaches from the wide-raning media outlets at the Big 12 media day. Some pointed out that Williams and the Texas seniors were 0-3 against Oklahoma, and others noted that the Oklahoma juniors had never beaten Oklahoma State with an 0-2 mark against the Cowboys. Such is the balance of the best football conference in the country, the nation's only league that features three teams ranked among USA Today/ESPN preseason Top 10 (all among the Top Five) released last week.
Are you surprised? Sadly, it seems like he's trying to protect himself from the past OU losses, and a possible loss to OU this year.
Exactly. It almost sounds like he's already got his excuse ready for the annual ass kicking by the sooners. I wonder what he said in the locker room when we were up during halftime of last years game. "OK guys. Let's not rub their faces in it or anything. Let's go ultra conservative so we don't make them mad." Personally, I don't think we ever got over 63-14....
The confidence just isn't there. Mack has accepted losing to OU as a part of life. He's said some pretty ridiculous things over the years, including these gems "I guess we just overlooked them." - 2000 RRS "We didn't lose, we just ran out of time." - 2001 Big 12 Championship "We had the lead and the momentum, I didn't want to risk throwing it into the wind." - 2002 RRS "I'll answer that one for Chris." - 2002 RRS "We were only two wins from the National Championship." - 2002 postseason
"We didn't lose, we just ran out of time." - 2001 Big 12 Championship I love this quote. This has got to be one of the dumbest things ever said!
My All-time favorite, especially since he allowed Chris to do so many media appearances including a weekly spot on Dan Patrick's radio show. Do any of you ever listen to his weekly radio show. Doesn't irritate you that whenever someone questions him about a game time decision or any football related decision he basically says fans should root for the team and leave the coaching to the coaches. He won't even entertain criticism for the most part. I always find him to be very condesending. But I guess he's a completely different person when he's recruiting players or talking to High School coaches.
Geesh. in every game someone is going to win and someone is going to lose. Maybe for coaches it is about shaping the lives of young men and softening the blows of a loss because they know it's only a game. All the life or death trash talk is just self-entertainment of the overzealous alumni .
That's what losers say. Winners go home and f**k the Prom Queen. BTW, being a CU student, I love the quote about how they just "ran out of time" against us in the Big 12 championship. Chris Simms was MVP of that game.
[rant]The '01 Championship chaps me more than any other game while I was a student. One, we were the favorites playing at home (Dallas). Two, despite Simms we still had a chance to win. Instead of setting up a return and giving Applewhite a final drive, Brown called for a punt block and Geiggar ran into the punter. Three, we kicked CU's ass 41-7 earlier in the year. **** Simms and Brown.[/rant]
Simms looked good for TB the other day. Perhaps Mack/Greg Davis was the problem, not Simms? I think that the misuse of Simms is why Bomar committed to OU over UT.
As much fun as it is to bash Simms, you're probably right. Every year, Mack says "we're going to run the ball". Every year, we don't run the ball. Or at least run the ball well.
