Well, I thought I'd give Firefox a try. I downloaded it, unstuffed it and clicked on it.

The icon is now in my dock blinking on and off. I won't quit. It won't open. What am I doing wrong?

When something like this happens, re-boot. Most software will load up instantly, but some - particularly if you've been doing other things or have had the computer on for a few days - will act weird until you re-boot.

Wish I could help, but I have only used Firefox on an apple once (about a month ago), and it worked okay for me, but I really am not even certain what I did to get it working. Let us know if that works, and if not, I'll make sure we find an answer. No reason to let a small problem like this stop someone from using firefox :)

Although, Safari is pretty nice. But I've never liked the way KHTML renders stuff (I don't know why, I've just never liked it much), and I didn't like its tab-browsing as much as Firefox.

If you are talking about it bouncing in the dock when it launches you can turn that off.

System Prefs -> Dock -> Uncheck the box next to "Animate Opening Icons".

no no, thats easy, but say you click on a program and expect it to open, it will bounce for like 5 mins, then nothing, neither the program opens, nor the bouncing continues. its annoying.

Does it happen with other users? Other programs or just Safari?

    Try to reinstall then restart.

I don't use Firefox. I use Safari and like it a lot.
