He didn't play that well most the game, but when it counted he was huge. And he hits FTs. That was huge having shoot 80s. I just wish he would just take it to basket strong all the time and let the refs decide the fouls.
I hope he'll get back to his usual self. He seemed to be affected slightly by the pressure of playoffs. Hope he'll get comfortable soon and contribute more to the series.
We all know about Carl and Rafer last night, but you can't forget about Scola...He was in the thick of things all night...Came up when it counted and that's what you want...I think as the series goes on, you'll see Scola get stronger and more assertive...He has to take it to the hole with authority...
He needs to take it to the basket stronger... Utah won't shy away from contact, so neither should we (especially when we are the ones who are at a disadvantage on the road). Also, while he did make his FT's... he should have never made the last one. It didn't even look like he was trying to miss it (he didn't change his ft routine or release at all)... just a complete total lapse of concentration/not realizing the situation that we can ill-afford right now.
I have been getting increasingly infuriated by his terrible finishing around the rim. He always makes his shot harder by going in sideways, taking it to the other side of the rim, and then throwing it up like a spaz (sometimes not even hitting the backboard). He needs to lock in on the basket, gather himself, and go STRONG straight into the closest defender.
It was obvious to me that he DID try to miss it. You could see him raise his hands in the air as soon as it went in, as if to say "what the hell..."
He did just enough for us to win. Like many have said before, he needs to learn how to initiate or take on contact. There are some instances where he could get some easily called fouls on Loozer or whoever else is guarding him but he does what he can to AVOID contact instead of taking it.
i think scola is very aggressive in this series, but not aggressive enough in terms of going into the contact when he goes for his layups. i love the fact that he passes up his mid-range game and tries to make it happen in the paint. hopefully he'll make more of his layups real soon b/c the way utah defends him and the way he has played, he could easily avg 20+ pts in this series. our 2 best players are shooting poorly right now. tmac is shooting 39% and scola is shooting 38%. both can do much better shooting the ball.
now looking back, the facial expression of luis at that moment after he made the 2nd ft was priceless.
I think his problems are largely a result of him still adjusting to the NBA game. He got an education on how he's supposed to play in the regular season and now he's finding out that it's not quite the same in the playoffs. He'll be fine.
I'm not counting on him taking the ball to the basket with authority all the time because of his Euro training but if he has gained confidence we might see him being more assertive.
No way, he just doesn't have the skill to do layups in the traffic.... definitely need to improve that in this off season.
boozer and milsap and harpring are strong sobs and i think they're making alot of low contact on his way up that's taking away his base and really throwing him off. he's off balance every time he's taking a shot and I don't think he's expecting to be. And frankly he's crafty not brutish. ya'll are right that he needs to stop jumping straight up and instead needs to be jumping at guys when he goes up. it allows him to take shots he's expecting to be off balance for which increases his chances of making it, and it forces contact so atleast theres more upper contact which is easier for the refs to call.
Scrubola was 4/13 last night from the field. 30% for a post player whose shots were mostly from 4 feet and less?? I'll say he is very talented at one thing: making easy layups incredibly difficult. The man just can't finish! Yes, his FTs were big. Imagine if he went strong; he might actually get more three point play opportunities.
Yeh, IMO he needs to take one more step to gather himself instead of jumping so far out and throwing himself at people on his drives. Boozer and Okur aren't shot-blockers, they shouldn't bother his shot. Especially Boozer, if he sees him, he should just jump straight at him and not contort, he won't contest his shot. If he can get his shot off Amare, who's a better shot blocker, then he should be able to get it off on Boozer.
I guessed Scola has been working so much on his FT that he can't even miss now if he wanted to. But yeah, I do agree that he's been making it so much harder on himself by increasing the difficulty of his shots around the basket. He needs to stop trying to avoid contact by shooting sideway and TAKE the freakin' contact.
I agree with you here, but I see progress, he got 10 FTA, that shows that he is taking on the contact......now if he would do it EVERY time, he can get 20 FTA. DD
I need to see him dunk the ball, at least once. Come on. He is very crafty around the rim but sometimes he makes too many moves. He need to finish strong. If he and Hayes didn't miss that opportunities in game 1 and game 2, Rox could have been 2-1 easily.
doug collins was spot on when he said Scola needs to stop jacknifing shots and take it strong to the basket. scola seems to shy away from contact and try to look pretty, thus making the shot harder than it actually is. not sure if he's going to change this anytime soon but hopefully adelman tells him this. btw, he almost killed us with that made free throwat the end.
