He is better...RICK ADELMAN SUCKS! 5-18 shooting should be one bad game or two max for Scola. He should be getting enough minutes and touches to shoot that bad and work out of it with hustle. Rick is r****ding his growth by not starting him when he is clearly the best power forward on this team. Any game he doesn't play 30 plus minutes is another dagger in the heart of RA as our coach as far as I am concerned. Battier plays 35 plus minutes a night and does much worse and less than Scola does. READ MY SIGNATURE(LIPS)!
When I saw him shoot a uncontested jump hook 2 feet from the basket (!!) and miss, I knew we were in trouble. That is seriously pathetic. He's turning into Scrubla.
Is Scola really just another player in the long line of cast offs? The teams that had Scola, Francis and James basically gave them up for nothing. Is it a case of "You get what you pay for"?
I hate bumping my own old thread, but I'm happy to say it really did just take some time for Luis, experienced or not, to figure out the league. I don't know how to posts graphs, otherwise I would, but his averages, by month (October game included in November), consistently improved, especially towards the end of the season: November - 7.24 ppg, 5.35 rpg December - 7.57 ppg, 4.79 rpg January - 9.93 ppg, 5.43 rpg February - 11.69 ppg, 5.92 rpg March - 13.40 ppg, 8.87 rpg April - 14.00 ppg, 9.00 rpg Assuming Yao coming back impacts his numbers a bit, still, having a 13+ ppg and 7.5+ rpg power forward on this squad for a full year will be awesome. Luis needs to work (1) mid-range jumper and FT's, (2) defense and foul trouble, and (3) finishing around the basket in the offseason, but I'm excited he turned out to be what I had originally expected.
I'm proud of how Luis improved over the year, especially since he didn't have a lot of time off last summer. He still managed to avoid the rookie wall. It's crazy how improved/young we are at the PF position now vs. last year. Now if we can just develop/sign a good young swingman, we can be set for the next few years (Wish Green would have worked out).
I agree with you there. I just meant in terms of having someone young that can be developed in the non Yao/TMac positions (since they wouldn't get PT there). I like Brooks for the future.

Scola is just a nice player. He is a classic hustle player with above average skills. We were very fortunate to get him.
I'm just sorry this thread was revived instead of one of several threads where I posted defending Luis. A lot of really good contributors here with egg on their faces!
Except before Scola and Landry came we had Chuck Hayes as our starting PF with Juwan Howard coming off the bench. PF was our other position of need before this year.

I love how Scola improved and all, but his style of play annoys the crap out of me.. Love his hustle, love his nose for loose balls, I just hate the fact that he HAS to shoot the ball everytime he touches it.. it really kills me.. sometimes, he would get 3 guys on him in the paint, with Battier & Jackson wide open, and he would just throw up a wild shot and totally ignore the fact that he has 3 guys on him.. another thing that annoys me about Scola is his frequent bone-headed plays: whether it's a foul with 2 seconds left on the clock, or a rebound tipped away from Deke to the other team.. I really hope that those are just rookie mistakes and he can just simply adjust them, but his selfishness really worries me at times.. it seems like his sole purpose when he is out there on the court is to showcase his skills and impress people rather than help his team win.. /ducks for cover
huh? we must've watched different games or maybe different scola's? the guy's bball iq is undoubtedly high. his main problem is in defense. oh, did i say he ALWAYS shoots right? big weakness there too.
Ibm is right, Scola's defensive problems are his biggest weaknesses which cause most of his foul troubles. I have seen him pass the ball out unselfishly to outside shooters in some regular games but he does make poor choices trying to take on 2 or 3 players in the paint at a time as well.I think he can and will improve with more time and experience.
He averages 1.3 assists to 1.3 TO's. That's tremendous for a rookie big man considering how little he had the ball in his hands before Yao went out. Usually, big men show their development in the asst/to category. It shows they are reading the game better, reading double teams, reading the opponent, etc.. I think he is the best on the team, along with Yao, with regards to shot selection.
