Guys I am 19 years old and my hair started thinning a few months back. Its not that bad, but its noticeable enough to have a few of my close friends mention it. This **** just pisses me off. I am 19 years old, isnt this thing not supposed to happen until i hit 30 or something.

Well anyways, I was wondering what things are out there that have worked for you others that have been in the same situation as me. I was thinking about going and getting some rogaine. Does anyone know if that stuff works? Or is it better to get something else, like those pills you see ads for on TV.

Im still 19 years old, and very fond of having hair. So im not ready to give it up without a fight. If anyone has any suggestions about the things they have tried then please give me your input.

Also, is there any way that i can get my hair back to the way it was. I know rogaine claims to be able to do that, is it true?

You are doomed. If you have the money to spend, however, you may delay the inevitable long enough for new scientific breakthroughs, unknown to the general public, to grow and flourish. Rogaine Extra-Strength doesn't work as well as they would have you believe, at least for most people, but it does a fair job of delaying further baldness, even if the "new" hairgrowth is spotty. I think the pill Propecia has an affect, but is expensive, and affects the libido of some men. Of course, if you can afford it, that gives you an excuse to get Viagra, and the like, which are fun regardless. Good luck. Buy a good fedora, or a beret.

But of course it's true. In a few easy sessions, you can go from this:

I think once I start going bald, I'll shave my head. The worst-looking thing is balding guys trying to cover it up or leaving some hair up there, it just makes the empty spots more noticeable. If you follow soccer, think Zinedine Zidane, he looked like some monk or something.

Yup, you are doomed dude. You are right that it happens more when you get around 30 but I have heard of people going bald before turning 20.

I really never even thought about rogaine (itched my scalp too much), propecia (too expensive), or hair plugs/toupee (too ridiculous looking); I had always said I was going to shave it.

Of course, I didn't have the guts for the longest time to do this but I finally did over a year ago and I love it. Granted, I am not as hardcore as some who shave theirs every day; instead, I go every 2 weeks before shaving mine.

I feel for you, Samar, it is not a good feeling to have to know that you are losing it up there. But talk to some people who you know that shave their heads, it may make you change your mind.

Sorry to hear about the hair dude - I hope you don't have a bumpy head!

I agree with the others. It's much better to shave it every couple of weeks than to try to hide it. You can't take Rogaine forever man.

However, my uncle did have some luck by bending over and massaging his scalp for 5 minutes every day. It's something about stimulating blood flow to the area. It seemed to work, but he got tired of doing it after a few years.

I'm glad I know what I look like bald and that I look OK being bald that way when/if my hair starts to thin I can just shave it all off.

My dad was bald at 20. He always told me I would be also. My hair lasted until my early 30's at which time the bald spot got too big for my liking and I shaved it all off. I went completely bald for about a year but being completely bald is a lot of work. Now I clip to a number 1 every sunday and it is care free.

My advice... Embrace that which you can not change.

Maybe have a look at hairlosstalk.com? It depends how much you care about it I guess. Prevention is easier than getting it back so it would be a good idea to use something which will stop your hair from thinning any further.

I had a friend who started going bald at 19 also, and by the time he was 22 he was shaving his head already. If you start losing it that young you're screwed. I started losing mine at the end of college and now at 28 I started shaving my head this year.

As George Costanza said regarding the subject, "Live, Damnit, Live!" "Live each day as if it were your last. Because in many ways..... it is."

I've been there so I speak from experience.

The sooner you deal with mentally the better off you'll be. Don't get down about seeing hair on the pillow and shower floor. Think about the money you'll eventually save on shampoo and hair stylists. It's just hair. The think I regret most is the last pictures of me with a full head of hair show a very bad hair style. I thought it was cool in the day. I'm sure Andre Agassi feels the same way.

If I were you, then I would start taking Propecia now. But, instead of taking Propecia, you should go to your doctor and get a prescription for Proscar...which is essentially the same thing but in a larger dose(5 mg versus 1 mg for Propecia). Then, you would cut up the Proscar into smaller doses and take those daily. The f*cking maker of Propecia charges an arm and a leg for Propecia just because their in a position to and is a perfect example of how prescription drug prices are out of control. Proscar is way less expensive.

Success is not guaranteed but Rogaine and Propecia(or Proscar), often used in combination, are the only two proven methods to regrow or keep hair. I use the latter which I believe has helped me keep alot of my hair. If I weren't using it, then I'm sure I would be worse off than I am now.

I think you should try both if your concerned about losing your hair. I'm sure there are plenty of people who will just say, "Suck it up, man. Shave your head. Bald is cool." . Well, most of these people still have their hair so their in no position to give advice.

Any other product that claims to grow hair at this point in time is full of crap so don't be fooled by other products on the market.

This is what I did. Of course, I wasn't going bald bald, but my hair was beginning to thin significantly, so I just went to the clippers.

I've been using Rogaine Extra Strength (5%) daily for the past year, and I've seen no more hair loss at my temples. I remember I used to run my fingers through my hair in the shower and get a bunch of fallout in my hands -> not anymore. The stuff really does slow down the hair loss, it's cheap, and doesn't mess with your sh*t.

Regarding Propecia, the stuff is very effective in about 30% of men, according my doctor. But, it does f*ck with your sh*t, which is why I refuse to use it. The reason is because it essentially blocks DHT (hair loss causing testosterone) from your system, which in turn screws you up in the loins. If you do decide to go this route, you're forced to take it forever.

It only has a sexual side effect in a very small percentage of men and is easily corrected just by stopping use. Typically, these problems go away once your body adjusts.

Also, Rogaine or anything else is no different than Propecia in that you have to take it continually or, once you stop, then you will lose the benefits. It's not a sole characteristic of Propecia.

I guess I'm just paranoid having heard from a couple of people who did have the side effects. Regarding the Rogaine, yes, you do need to continue treatment to keep the progress. However, it's only like $25 for a 3 months supply with the generic brand.

I know how you feel man, it sucks. My hair started going thing at around 19 and has gotten a little worse each year. I'm 25 now and it seems like it has slowed down a little, but it's still pretty thin in some areas on the top and back. I haven't taken the plunge yet to shave it off, but I'm sure I will within the next year or two. I'm just afraid I will have a weird looking head or some huge birthmark. I keep telling myself I'm going to get in really good shape so that I would look better with a shaved head, but that hasn't happened yet.

About a year ago somone on this bbs recomended horse shampoo to thicken the hair you do have left. I've been using it for a while now and it does seem to help a little. It's called Mane n Tail if you want to give it a shot, you should be able to buy it at any drug store.

As for Rogaine, I did try it for a couple months but it didn't seem to help much. It made my hair really oily so I stopped using it.

My roommate had his hair thinning right after college. He started using Propecia and when i saw him a few months ago, it was clear he was regrowing hair. Not for everyone, but it definately worked for him.

man, this is more common than i thought. i have a 20 year old friend who's hair is thinning big time. he's always wearing a cap to hide it. i feel really bad for him. although, i'm not quite sure if he knows we know.

as for me, i thought i was losing my hair in my early 20s too. i was sporting shoulder length hair and then out of "tradition" or "religious" purposes i had to shave it off. well, afterwards i looked in the mirror and saw what my hair line really looked like. and it looked like a receeding one. for a couple of months i worried about. kept thinking WTF is happening. it turns out, it's just the way my hair line is. it's been 8 years since i shaved it off and still looks the same. *crossing fingers*

Thanks guys, everyones really helpful. I have shaved my head for fun a couple of years back (before it started thinning), and it didnt look too bad. But still I do prefer to have my hair. You guys are very brave to just accept it, but that is something that I just cant do. Atleast not yet, not without trying everything.

I went to my doctor and what she said was that if i dont want to risk the potential side effects of something like propecia i should go on and try rogaine for a little while. If it doesnt work then she said that i could come back in and they would do some tests to make sure that its not something other than heredity (like thyroid disorder). And if its just heredity then i will be locked on to propecia or the likes.
