Is not a translation per se. Think about it as how you would speak of the team in a casual conversation. Reverse example: El Real Madrid = The Real Madrid
Sorry, these "Los" jerseys are one of the stupidest things the NBA has done. Merchandising, I get that. But it just looks stupid as hell to me. Whatever.
As a latin american to me it's no big deal but I acknowledge it as a nod and appreciate it as such, imo it's not supposed to be anything more than that.
It doesn't make sense to me, but i guess they really wanted to incorporate it into the name. "Los" and "el" are basically "the" so they add that to make it officially in spanish, otherwise there would be no difference. In spanish the pronunciation isn't "rowkets"...the only difference is you have to roll the R, the O sound is about the same.
I think its cool, and very creative. The spanish culture is rooted heavily and adopted by many americans today. Rivers, cities, and physical geographic features still carry the their spanish names on the north american continent.
I'm not a fan of this for various reasons. Changing "The" to another language and putting it on a jersey seems painfully overdone. We don't wear normal jerseys that say "The Rockets". As I watch the game, it simply serves as a reminder that the league is all about marketing gimmicks. I'm sure that without these jerseys, the hispanic population would rest assured knowing their money will be taken just like anyone else's. When I buy football gear in Mexico or Brazil, I'm happy with it being in Spanish or Portuguese. I imagine if I were the reverse and liked an American team I'd be perfectly fine with English gear.
It isn't that bad of an idea but I just think it is tacky to add it to jerseys that don't have 'The' on their jersey already.
i would prefer los houstons, essay. who you gonna get crazy with>? It's been going for a couple of years, started with los spurs and made its way around the league. I like it! (big drexler smile)
We do have those jerseys. It's just a marketing scheme anyways. The owners could care less about culture they just want to sell tickets and jerseys. No offense, but I think anyone that comes to this country should speak English. Assimilation is very important and people have much less misunderstandings if we all speak one common language. It's ok to speak several different languages though, it's just that most countries in the world share a common language. It makes life easier when you have important things such as language in common with your next door neighbor.
A bit off topic. D&D material here. But yeah, Los is a marketing ploy that is patronizing to a culture to say the least.
