If you have to make a decision based on dollars there is almost no way to justify a move to LA/Bay Area California. The LA area real estate has gone through a boom similar to the Bay Area's and you should only move here if you really have to or want to live here. If it's only because you think the job pays well compared to Houston that's not much of a reason. Also, for 400 to 500K, you would be amazed at how many multiple bids there are on hovels and dumps.
