Clutch has this article on the front page link. Do you guys think they can go after players like Hollis and Domercant when all they have is a 2nd round pick? If they do, I'll be very impressed cause I watched both players play and they are terrific pure shooters. Guess JVG wants a newer version of Allan Houston on the Rockets team. THURSDAY, JUNE 12, 2003 4:22 PM CST New Coach Wastes No Time On First Day By Clutch Jeff Van Gundy hits the ground running in first day as coach as Rockets run workouts for Oklahoma's Hollis Price and Eastern Illinois' Henry Domercant One day after being introduced at a press conference as the new Rockets coach, Jeff Van Gundy watched some workouts for his new squad Thursday. Oklahoma's Hollis Price and Eastern Illinois' Henry Domercant may not be replacements for Cuttino Mobley and Steve Francis, but the guards did run through drills for Rockets staff at WestSide. Many in Texas know about Price. The 6-foot-1, 170 pound point guard was a big factor in the Sooners' successful season, averaging 19.5 ppg on 44.4% shooting from long range and 93.4% from the free throw line. Domercant, a 6-foot-4, 200 pound shooting guard, averaged 27.9 points per game last season as a senior. He's a terrific shooter, hitting roughly 43% from long range. Van Gundy was present for only a part of the workout, but did spend time at WestSide. He talked with both Moochie Norris and Terence Morris as well as Kings backup guard and local product Damon Jones. Van Gundy was also spotted talking to former Rocket and ClutchCity.net icon Mario Elie, who runs the scrimmages at Westside. Elie has been very open in lobbying for an assistant coach position on Van Gundy's staff.
this team's biggest need, even above a brusing powerforward, is a few pure shooting guards and forwards that can take advantage of a double or triple team on yao...hopefully boki will take one of these spots...
i believe steve kerr's contract is up after this year. he'd be a wonderful, wonderful addition to the rockets.
Kerr is a great shooter, but he's 38 and barely gets anymore playing time. He's one of those veterans that comes off the bench in desperate times to hopefully give a spark. I'd rather find a way to sign a 21 year old Hollis Price and give him the money.
Jon Barry will be available. Not sure he's a Van Gundy type of player, but he can shoot and be a great spark off the bench. Hollis Price is a zero in the NBA. Some guys are built to excel in college and be nothing in the pros, Hollis is one of those guys.
Great links for Hollis Price stats and bio: http://sports.espn.go.com/ncb/player/profile?playerId=956 http://soonersports.ocsn.com/sports/m-baskbl/mtt/price_hollis00.html Great links for Henry Domercant stats and bio: http://sports.espn.go.com/ncb/player/profile?playerId=2422 http://www.edgesportsintl.com/domercant.htm
Maybe, maybe not. I believe there is always room for pure shooters in the NBA. We don't need these guys to be superstars. We need them to hit the outside shots and the open treys that Franchise will dish to them after he penetrates inside.
fyi: JVG said in the paper that Dawson, Lindsey, Ash and staff will be running the draft evaluations, that he'll remain more focused on evaluating free agents and the Rockets players.
WHY NOT?!? Great idea! Hollis Price.....he's short....and kinda small. He can shoot. He's local..that's good. The other guy...Oh Illinois..hmm...He's bigger...maybe we should get him. I still say get Kendrick Perkins! And try to get Steve Smith! Or Steve Kerr! Or both! Any of these players would be great. Steve Kerr. Steve Smith. Hollis Price. Whatever the other guy's name is from Illinois. Jon Barry. Eric Piatkowski. Eddie House. Roger Mason. Tyronn Lue. Kenny Anderson. I'd like to get Steve Kerr...since he has a lot of experience and could be a good mentor. But I think he's returning to the Spurs or retiring... I'd like to get Steve Smith for the MLE. I think he would be a good backup...but I'd rather get a point guard. FIRST. RESIGN POSEY! Jon Barry would be a good backup too. Good energy... I just don't hope that Glen Rice gets to play next season. Nachbar needs to play!
Only SLA could have a post that mentions Tyronn Lue, Roger Mason, Jon Barry, Eddie House, AND Eric Piatkowski!! You are like a vampire, but instead of sucking blood, you suck bandwidth space on this BBS. Please stop. Now.
What about Maryland's Steve Blake? Some rate him as second best PG behind Ford. His 3-pt % is just behind Price's, but he can distribute, run the floor and play defense. Francis is probably already familiar with him due to the Maryland connection. It would allow Steve to play more 2.
If you wanna take a Spur, I like Steve Smith's shot, though I think he comes with too high of a pricetag. Steve Kerr? He still plays? Get that guy a condo in Miami ... he's ready to retire.
But not all of us. While I did skip most of SLA's post, Manny's post is just plain offensive. SLA isn't trolling so there's no need to flame him. Put him on your ignore list or something. Why are you sucking up bandwidth with an unprovoked personal insult? (And now, why am I sucking bandwidth with complaining about it?) On the subject, how about Glen Rice? I heard he was a pretty good shooter.
