Being #1 is terrible.Youre bound to lose. I don't care what rank we are, as long as we aren't #1. Even if we lose once, I still think we have the #1 seed wrapped up
Well, unless Texas plays subpar against OK St. on Wednesday.. there's no way to avoid #1... I'm hoping somehow Pitt jumps Texas or that OSU plays out of their minds against MSU. Same for the Saturday/Sunday games.
Didn't only 1 one number seed make it to the final four last season ? You can't really predict upsets. Baylor had one of the easier draws to the elite 8 with the number 3 seed last season.
Of course #1 teams lose, because everyone loses. But if you look at it, I bet they lose less often than any other ranking.
I'm usually the guy that cheers against the Longhorns becoming the #1 team (I had a very bad feeling about it last year... and I turned out quite right)... but if there was ever a Longhorns team I felt could handle that burden, it would be this team.
I would agree... I'm usually that guy too. I don't like when a team gets pressured by the burden of #1.. but I think this team is different from last season. In their heads, they don't have to view themselves as #1 in the rankings... they already have that mentality right now that they are the best team. Gary Johnson is a beast.
Does Gary have a future at the next level? He's a physical specimen, but doesn't have NBA size for a PF. He has a solid face-up game, crashes the boards, and plays great team defense. Does he need to develop a 3-pt stroke to play in the league, or could he cut it as a defense-first swingman? To put his physical nature in perspective, he's an inch shorter and 10-15 pounds heavier than Damion James. By the way, yet another Big 12 victory to add to the resume. The train just keeps on rolling.
Some of these Longhorns might not want to be #1, but they sure are playing like the #1 team in the country.. these guys are impressive
From my understanding, he also has a heart defect that will require a transplant within the next 10 years. He missed his freshman year because of it, and given that he would need it over the next 10 years, I imagine it probably takes him out of the NBA, but I really don't know any details.
Gary Johnson needs to improve a lot of things if he ever wants some consistent playing time at the next level. His face up game is decent at the college level, but he'd get denied by real NBA talent. He's not a very good rebounder, doesn't have your prototypical size for a PF type of player, and it seems to me he lacks the overall strength to handle the true PFs on defense down low. He gives outstanding effort every night, though, and he has a great work ethic, so I think that will help him make some NBA teams and maybe stay in the league for a while... but I don't see him making a big impact anywhere.
It was fun watching the Horns scrimmage last night. Why were those high school juniors wearing Oke State uni's?
He doesn't have the lateral quickness of Damion James, or the overall athleticism. James was also a better shooter. I like him, but he's a solid 4 year college player, and not much more. And no, he's no where near Chuck Hayes. Johnson is an ok defender, but even in college, Chuck was elite.
I really, really want Hamilton in a Rox uniform. Scorer, defense, HITS FREE THROWS. I cringe when Thompson gets to the FT line every time. That air ball was embarrassing.
