So, it looks like there's a chance that I could be moving to London next year. Anyone got any advice? Where to live, etc?

Somewhere just outside close to the train. It's really, really expensive. A little more than NYC from what I've heard.

Too bad they are all hideous.

If you don't mind a longish commute (if you are working in central london) I would recommend living outside central london, solely due to how freakin expensive it is. A place as close as Wimbledon is still a helluva lot cheaper than central london.

It's true that English people are unattractive, on average. However, London is such a cosmopolitan city, so there are plenty of hot chicks all over that city. In fact, some of the hottest girls I've ever seen were in London (and I've been to a lot of places).

I hope where ever you are working in London is paying you in pounds or is paying for your living expenses because it is really expensive there. All the prices are exactly the same except in pounds which is trading at 2 dollars to the pound.

10 dollars for a value meal at macdonalds.
20 dollars for a 10 minute cab ride.
5 bucks for a trip on the subway.
20 dollar tax per day to drive you car inside London.
Water at a restuarant will run you 4 to 8 bucks depending on the brand because they don't serve tap water.

If you want to live in the city, you are talking thousands of dollars a month in rent for a small 2 bedroom. There was a article in the newspaper when I was there about a person who was paying about 1500 dollars a month for a 80 sq ft closet in the center of town. My companies meal allowance there is roughly 70 dollars a day and I usually go over that unless the breakfast is provided at the hotel.

That will make going to a Rockets game really pricey.

London is too expensive. I was there on business and every day I was spending 300-400. They better pay you a lot.

Midnight. Unless they have a late license, which a lot of them do. Then, its whenever. Usually between 3-5 in the morning.

Since I'm an American living in London, I'd like to put my .02 pence. ;)

Where to live: I agree with most people, living outside of central london is the key. If working in central its vital to live close to a tube station. Currently I live in the Hendon area of north london, which makes my rent a lot cheaper.

Transportation: London in my opinion has the best public transportation system in the world. The tube runs until a little after midnight, and if you happen to be out after that, there is always the night bus, so even if your out an about after midnight, you will still be able to go home.

Food: If you like mexican or texmex food, then this is not the place for you. However, every other cuisine you can find here is pretty good. My staple diet here consist of lamb donner kebabs, they are a god-send after a late night out.

Other thoughts: As another poster said, coming here its virtually the same number in price however because of the conversion rate it comes out as twice as much. So once you move, you need to stop converting the prices and look as it as if your making £ then your spending £, it makes the pain less.

If you have any other specific questions, let me know.

    Thanks for the information, man.

The reason for the possible move is for my wife to go to vet school over there. She can do the schooling to become a vet surgeon in five years which would take eight over here. Plus, her degree over there is recognized over here.

The company I work for has opened a London office as well as others scattered across Europe. We provide electronic invoicing between law firms and their corporate clients. In a brief conversation with the VP of our department (also CEO's brother), he indicated that he's been pushing for someone experienced to go over there to work with the law firms as electronic invoicing is very new to Europe. Of course, I have no idea what I'd make and if it'd be feasible, but it's definitely worth looking into. The pros of moving to London for five years vastly outweigh the cons which are all pretty minimal except for not seeing family and friends as much. And no good Tex-Mex. :( :)

Anyway, here's where the vet school is:

    Royal College Street
    London
    NW1 0TU

Here's where my company's office is:

    90 Long Acre
    Covent Garden
    London, WC2E 9RZ UK

Those anywhere close to each other?

I haven't been to London in decades but I would agree on making sure you are getting paid in Pounds. The dollar exchange rate is terrible right now.

As for English women being hideous I've met quite a few that were very attractive.

I can't imagine that it would be cheaper doing schooling over there verse somewhere like A&M. Even if you are shaving 3 years off. The experience would be nice, but I don't see it being that much cheaper. I would look at the numbers closer

if the moneys not a concern, definitely go for it. The experience would be worth it. You can travel the rest of Europe as well.

BTW, my Moms from England so quit raggin on British women
