Pat Riley got cocky, took too many risks last year:

    - Gave away Mike Miller, Joel Anthony and Draft Pick
    - Signed Greg Oden, Michael Beasley

The team needed young legs (draft pick), and shooters (Mike Miller).

I've always admired Pat. When the Rockets weren't in, I always rooted for Showtime against the Celtics. Riley's been successful at almost everything :grin:he's done. That said, he seems desperate, old, and bitter..like this is it... and today's player isn't going to buy into his honor theme....in many ways tough to watch/sad to see.

The mercenary nature of sports today, the exact thing that allowed them to assemble this cast, is working against him now. He's banging his head against the wall. Miami's done.

Riley sounded pi$$ed. Taking to the whole team and organization. Get a grip and man up. I am sure he will get his way in the end and have his big 3 all back for one more year at least.

OP what's your beef with Riley? He said all the right things a president should of.

    Ball is in LeBron's court.

I don't think he had a choice in getting rid of Miller.

Success at every level? I think that you're forgetting Larry Bird...Hall of fame player, NBA Coach of the year and NBA Executive of the year. Riley was a marginal bench player.

Bird has never won a title as a coach or executive, Riley has won seven (plus another as an assistant coach). The gap between Riley and Bird as coach/executive is as large in Riley's favor as the gap as players is in Bird's.

I was LOL @ his desperation, not his accomplishments.

However, if you wanted to bring accomplishments into the equation, I could lol @ the fact that a man of such renown in basketball, would allow himself to lose his composure and stoop to ranting about forever bonds, and such.

The same guy that coached Magic, Kareem, Ewing, Shaq, should be above this. This ain't even his best team and lebron isn't even his best player he's coached.

    That's LOL material.

No he's just knows more about the nba than most of you.

So back to the subject Newb

So suddenly pat Riley looks like he doesn't know what he's doing ?
He went to what 4 straight finals ?

He's pissed at the media thinking it is abandon ship time.

You realize in the 80s the celtics and lakers battles exchanging titles ?

Did either team blow it up if they lost a finals series ?

    I understand his point.

Not even close. Bird was coach of the year and executive of the year, he was elite. Riley wasn't even a starting player.

Riley is a great GM, he combines both old school NBA experience with new school cap knowledge and advancements in technology, it's hard to find people like that because usually old dudes think they're better than new tech and analytics dynamos like Dmorey and Ujiri don't have actual NBA experience and the lessons learned from it.

We can see all these unfold in the way he constructed the Miami big 3, first he used his street cred to convince or play a part inWade, LBJ and Bosh teaming up. Then he used his salary cap savvy to time it so that when all 3 became FAs, the Heat cap would be empty. Finally he appointed his groomed successor coach Spo (who uses analytics in coaching) and gave him full support in coaching the team.

There's no point in blowing the team up, it's not like Miami was a failure this season, they got to the NBA finals for crying out loud. Did Boston blow up their team after they got beat by LA? Did the Spurs trade TD after they lost every even year? All they really need is retool, maybe the big 4 is a pipe dream but I can certainly see the Heat trading Bosh and getting Melo. Suddenly, the Heat is back and better than ever.

^ Don't forget that Riley was the GM when Miami executed the Shaq trade and became HC (again) when they made their first championship run. Dude is incredible

In that case, wont be ready to win until a few more years until that draft pick develops and they have the proper cast.
LBJ would immediately contend here fot at least the next half decade.
