I'm always trying to come up with interesting things to do in Houston. I lived here the first 18 years of my life, and I honestly never did anything but the crap that everyone does. Astroworld, Natural Sciences Museum, Zoo, major sports games, you know. But there has to be more than this. It seems to me every city has little tiny, not-so-well-known attractions that are extraordinary and interesting, but that aren't so highly publicized. For instance, when I lived in Dallas, there was a place called Nickel Mania. It was not very popular, but they had lots of the old school arcade games that were popular when I was in junior high. Most of them played on 1 or 2 nickels, and you could have a hell of a time all night on very little coin (HA HA HA HA HA GET IT). I love places like that. So give me anything that is just a little off the wall. Eating establishments with strange themes, beautiful parks that are tucked away somewhere, anything, I want to hear it all. I'd do an internet search for this sort of thing, but most of the places I am looking for would be difficult to find on the 'net unless you knew exactly what you are looking for...and I don't. So I call on the collective experience and intelligence of the Hangout. Show me the way. Thanks.
Dick's restraunt. I'm, not sure about the one in Houston(never been, not sure where it is), but the one in San Antonio is awesome. The waiters walk around and make fun of you. You walk in and they throw your menu's at you, throw your napkins at you, and then proceed to make fun of you the rest of the night. My brother was given a hat that said "My friends think I'm straight", and this little 5 year old we were with got one that said "I will fart for a quarter". All your food is served in a buckett. There are bras and whatnot hanging from the ceiling. There is a claw game(like the ones you can win stuffed animals out of), except you can grab lobsters, and if you catch a lobster, they will cook it for you for free. All in all...you need to check this place out if you haven't yet.
Is it actually named Dick's Last Resort? Edit: Because that seems to be the name of the one in Dallas, except that I can't find one in Houston. According to their website they have a location in Dallas and San Antonio. Is this a new location in Houston?
Yes, that's it. IIRC the new one in Houston was built in the last year. I never knew about the one in Dallas.
It's a chain, those things are all over the country, though I would hesitate to call them attractions....

Now now. A gentleman never...uhh...plans to kiss and tells, I suppose. But yes, since it was brought up, this thread was mostly done because I am looking for an interesting and different place to take a date.
Some of these are little known while some/most are well known The Beer Can House The Orange Show The Art Car Museum Museum of Printing History La Caraffe Texas Junk Co. Lankford Grocery (best homestyle hamburger in town) Shopping in the Heights on 19th Street Marfralas (good luck with this one and bring a date) Rothko Chapel The Menil The Cy Twombly Exhibit Buffalo Bayou (Eleanor Tinsley Park) Allen's Landing Tranquility Park Have you ever been to the top of the Police Officers Memorial on Memorial? There's something at the very top of the memorial The old Jeff Davis Hospital? you can drive by it. Trespassing is completely at YOUR OWN RISK!!
This isn't really a date place, but if somebody is looking for a place that you can get good stuff for the walls of your house without spending a ton of money there is a little "decorator's secret" in the Heights....I think. I kinda forget where it is, but I'm sure you can look it up in the whitepages or smartpages.com. The place is called Davis Hardware and while about 35 years ago I think it actually carried hardware, its a painting and frame place. They bring in a bunch of decorator art from New York and sell it cheap. Actual paintings, but the cheap stuff. They have TONS of limited edition prints and the such, just stacked here and there. You can dig through drawer after drawer of it. they have a ton of the hand drawn plates of flowers and birds and whatnot that is real popular...and its totally cheap. What they are really known for is their framing. They make all their own frames, and some could probably be considered museum quality. They are very reasonable in price. When decorators shop for decorator art, they go to this place. They have kinda weird hours, so call ahead...and if the door is locked, knock, they usually lock the door even in business hours because they don't want too many people in their kinda cramped store at a time. Check it out.
on top? I don't know. Go check it out. Kam, you were born at the 2nd JD Hospital on Allen Parkway (now demolished). The old haunted JD Hospital was shut down in 1937. Unless your about 66 years old.
