I have to do a compare/contrast paper for English. I decided to pick Star Trek vs. Star Wars. However, I'm having trouble coming up with general topics to use and I was wondering if someone could help me out. I'm most familiar with the original star trek crew, but if someone has ideas from another show, I know those well enough to write about (I think). Here's what I have so far: similar: use of artificial life forms (both have artificial life and androids and such) different: theme (good v. evil for star wars, limitless potential for human development for star trek) different: setting (a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away v. hundreds of years in the future) I don't need any really specific details for now, just general ideas. I would appreciate any help you guys can offer. Thanks ------------------
Compare and Contrast the political vs. religious elements in Star Trek and Star Wars. Write it well, and then share it w/ us. In particular, Star Wars (the movies) relies on a Christlike savior figure whereas Star Trek is more about political cooperation and diplomacy (I know that the Star Wars books get more into politics, but I'm concentrating on the films/tv). ------------------ (===)
That's a good idea. I think I'll try to include that. Can anyone think of other similarities between the two since I have several differences? ------------------
empire/federation blah blah.. try to organize it based on political organization, economic organization, and cultural organization.. seems like you have cultural down. ------------------

Star Trek is much more about character development than Star Wars. Star Wars is an action movie series, while the star trek series are action shows that usually make you think. I am a little biased in favor of Star Trek, though. You might want to be careful about the "long time ago" thing. Star Wars is still set in the future, its just the past for the story teller. ------------------ Hakeem "The Dream" Olajuwon is the greatest player in the history of basketball. Steve_Francis_rules: Check out www.jedi.net for a million links including a bunch of Star Wars vs. Star Trek stuff. I must disagree with this. Star Wars is known for its character development. That is a primary reason was its fans are so devoted and why Star Wars was not just another sci-fi movie. Interesting perception. Where'd you come up with that one? ------------------ "We got f*cking smashed every day. And then when we came here to Beverly Hills, we had drugs, we had chicks, we had orgies. I thought I'd died and gone to f*cking Rome" ---Ozzy Osbourne, on the early days of Black Sabbath
Thanks for the link, Lynus. Since i assume you've been to this website before, do you happen to know where specifically there is star wars v. star trek stuff, cause i can't seem to find any. ------------------
where in the world did you come up with that, and, who pray tell, is the storyteller? "a long time ago" was lucas' way of separating SW from the shackles of science fiction literature, which is universally set in the future. he never felt sci-fi did the trilogy justice, and i would tend to agree. it's not dependent on science fiction -- it's a story simple enough to be transportsed, nearly in tact, to any era. ------------------ Ric http://www.houstonprofootball.com
Star Wars and Star Trek have a different approach to the space theme and technology. It is what makes each series unique. Star Trek is a highly technical show. It is very scientific. Everything they do is explained scientifically, from the propulsion system to the phasers. This causes the show to become very dated, as our technology changes. For instance, watch the early Star Trek and the current ones . . . the cockpit in the old one looks very old and 1960s-ish. However, the newer ones have touch-panels, and the technology of today projected into the 23rd (or whatever) century. Star Wars takes the exactly opposite approach. How does a Light Saber work? What is the propulsion system on a Star Destroyer? None of that is answered in a technical fashion. Watching Star Wars now, it doesn't look dated at all. The technology was not a focus on Star Wars, but the story and characters, that was the key. The science of Star Wars is not even an issue, because they are VERY non-specific about it. ------------------ What can change the nature of a man?
These are great ideas for the differences, but does anyone know of any similarities? ------------------
Star Wars Star Trek There's a similarity. ------------------ Forget LHutz, Bob Rainey is by far the coolest poster in cc.net history!
Great idea. Why didn't I think of that? It will probably be hard to write an entire paragraph on that, though. ------------------ [This message has been edited by Steve_Francis_rules (edited March 23, 2001).]
