Anyone know a good, free, website to learn some basic french? I'll be going to France this summer, and I've always been interested in learning.
I downloaded the Rosetta Stone and several language packs a while back. I completely Spanish, and it's not bad but it's not magic or anything. Worth a try.
http://www.livemocha.com/ Livemocha works pretty well especially if you interact with other members. I use it to brush up on my Chinese and Russian.
Library in my 'hood has CDs with easy-to-follow instructions on spoken (not written) French. Check your local Harris County Public Library. I completely English????
Baguette = Bread Croissant = Croissant Oui Oui = Yes Voulez vous coucher avec moi ce soir = Do you want to sleep with me tonight? I think you're all set now.

There's no fool-proof way to learn a foreign language. You have to have a great instructor, great study materials, a great teaching/instructing method, and most of all practice, practice, practice. My best advice to you would be to take a French class this year in school (if you're still in school), and hopefully by the time you get to France this summer, you'll be able to fully activate your language skills with practice.
I've been to France about 6 times and I don't know much french and have no problems at all. If you ask people if they speak english first, they are very nice to you, especially if you have kids. And always say bonjour. Its very impolite not to acknowledge someone first by saying bonjour before speaking to them.
