My wife was part of a several hundred (1000+) employee layoff at her job today. Out of nowhere. Pray for us... this is hard on her. They have her on a short list of call backs with no promises... We shall see. And be careful out there in corporate America! And pray for us... again. EDITED at my wife's request (I put too much detail here... oops) p.s. - if you know my situation the last 8 months, this event could not come at a worse time.
I am really sorry to hear about your wife. It's always bad getting laid off (I've been laid off once and my wife twice in the dot com crash days), particularly with the economy the way it is. It sounds like your wife is an outstanding employee, so hopefully she'll wind up on her feet at the same bank or somewhere else soon. There might be a lot fewer jobs out there, but places are hiring and looking for the best possible people for those positions. Hang in there and best of luck.
Sorry to hear about that. I'm afraid there will be more stories popping up just like yours. Kind of on the topic: How does unemployment benefits work? Does everyone get the same pay, regardless of the previous job they just had?
as someone who just got laid off 2 weeks ago, i know the answer is no. it can range from something less than $100/wk up to $392/wk.
No. You get a percentage of your former salary up to a weekly cap. My wife got the max check when she got laid off from Exxon and from a dot-com. When the restaurant where she was a cook folded, she got a much lesser unemployment check. Every state is a bit different, and I'm not up to date with the current numbers are.
My wife got hit last week. She has been with the company 13 years and have had great reviews. The company is also reporting record profits. Its just a numbers game.
yup...depends on your salary at the job you got laid off from...drinking money...it takes about month to get it and nowadays they send you chase debit card every two weeks...they use to send a check the last time I was laid off... afraid this will be the norm in 2009...a head hunter called about a job in Omaha, NE...I was like, really? not sure about that one...
It's happening everywhere. The consulting contract I was working ended two weeks ago, so now I'm looking for the next one, and there isn't much out there. I think I would actually prefer to go back to being a fulltime employee somewhere. The pay isn't as much as being a consultant, but at least they provide benefits. I filed for unemployment last week and was denied. They have no record of me making any money last year because I was a 1099. Sent an email off to the Texas Workforce Commission to see where I can send a copy of my 1099 to in order to rectify this situation. What really makes me mad is not only the fact that everything is done online or over the phone now (no more unemployment office to go to and actually speak to a human being) but also the fact that they give you a debit card instead of a check. How are you supposed to use a debit card to pay your mortgage and bills?
Sorry to hear that. Hopefully, she will find a job soon. P.S. what happened in past 8 months? I hope it's not that bad.
it sucks, but keep a positive attitude and have her attend all the business/job events around town. be in attack mode! tell her she's down 0-2 in phoenix, but keep the faith cause it'll turn around.
That is the crappy thing, business that are reacting to the "Maybe" scenarios.....that is bad mojo IMO. If you are doing well, don't lay people off, ...watch your market, but for crying out loud laying people off when you are reporting record profits..... That is bad mojo. DD
