i've been using Netflix for the past 2 months. They give you a 2 week free trial so it won't hurt to try it. then you can either have 2 DVDs out at a time for $14+tax, 3 DVDs out at a time for $20, 4 DVDs for $25... when i first started the return-to address was in San Jose but now they have a PO Box in Houston so it gets there quicker. I think they still send them out of SJ. anyway, it's real convenient and you don't have to worry about late fees. however, some titles have a long wait. I have the $14 a month deal and it's OK. There is a new one from DVDBarn.com that has 1 movie at a time for $8.95 no tax and they are based in AZ.
it depends. i got Oceans Eleven in the mail today and it was just released 3 days ago. I also rented Not Another Teen Movie, which is also pretty new. You make a list and it will automatically send whatever is in your queue. you can put movies that have not been released yet in your list to better your chances of getting it. If the title you want is unavailable then it sends the next one on your list.
i just started with Netflix too. so far i like it, i'm using the three DVD's out for 20 bucks a month option. i'm learning that if i stagger the three by not sending all three back at once, then i usually have at least one movie laying around to watch all the time. it usually takes a couple of days for mailing back and forth/ returning and recieving and that is if your list ( quese ) has plenty of requests waiting to be filled. i like it a lot better than Butt-busters late fees....i'm saving money already. i also like the idea of the quese because i just fill it up with movies that i originally meant to see and just forgot about. so i add them to my list and i'm just waiting for them to show up in my mail box.
Two things: 1.) How can anyone not like Ghostworld? 2.) Do you really consider buying a movie before you ever see it?
i do it all the time... memento, oceans 11, way of the gun, toy story 2, blow, deuce bigalow, shrek, final fantasy, american pie 2, almost famous, detroit rock city...
hmmmm...interesting. I've never even thought about doing that. Paying twenty bucks for a DVD that you may never want to watch again after the first viewing seems a little risky to me. But I can be pretty cheap (poor) sometimes.

i admit that i have done this a few times but only if i've known somebody that has seen it or a couple of somebody's. i got burned a time or two, but for the most part i've done pretty well. i got Gone in 60 seconds and Training Day without having had seen them. they were not the greatest of movies, but i liked them and would watch them again. i've bought Chocolat and Mask of Zorro and i still have not watched them yet.
you can always return them and get your money back...the postage is cheaper then renting them...not that i have returned one yet...
Just out of interest, all you guys who buy and collect DVDs, what is the rationale? Do you sit and watch these movies time and time again? What sort of frequency do you re-watch them at? The only DVDs I would conisder buying instead of renting are:- a) kids movies b) ABSOLUTE classics/favorites If I have some free time to watch a movie, I would generally prefer to watch a new release or something I haven't seen before rather than watch something I already own again.
that's a good point and i have different answers actually. there are some movies that i do watch over and over for various reasons. like you said,... " Classics" & " Favorites". Monty Python's Holy Grail, Pretty Women, T2, Arthur, Braveheart, Forest Gump, Jerry Maguire, Legends of the Fall, blah, blah, blah etc, etc. then there are movies that i just like and want to have around in case i want to watch it again. movies like Freeway with Reese Witherspoon was not a blockbuster movie but i think it is halirious for its warped sense of humor. Chasing Amy, She's the One. i may not watch these all the time, but Rental stores don't keep these movies in stock all the time. so to answer your question.............i do have movies that sit there for years sometimes and i don't watch them, but in case i do......i don't have to leave the house to get it or wait three days for Netflix to send it to me. if i watch it three or four times, in my opinion it's paid for itself. and i have been known to take a few to CD Warehouse and trade it for some music too.
Usually for me, its movies that I would like to watch more than once. Also those DVDs where you would still watch years later. For example, I watched my There's Something About Mary DVD the other day. Still made me laugh my ass off. But most of time, its movies that I liked when I watched it in theaters. On some occassion its where I would like to watch it on the home theater system like Pearl Harbor, True Lies, and Gone in 60 Seconds.
I should've been more specific. I was referring to the 1st season box. It is now selling for $99.19 and was selling for something like $93 before.
I've used Netflix for about a year or so now. I've had no problems with them whatsoever. The one problem is that you better watch about 4 or 5 movies a month or it's not really worth it (at least to me). You also need to give yourself some lead time because it takes them about 3-4 days to get the DVD's to you (at least to me here in Dallas).
I am really considering on buying Animal House, my mom and friends say that its a great movie, i figure i will prob like it too. I think i might also get Fight Club too, heard that was good also. Do you guys think i should get them?
I buy DVDs for two reasons: 1) If I really liked the movie, it give me the opportunity to see it again any time I want. Its great to have a movie collection, watch something when your bored or show a great movie to a friend that has yet to see it. 2) The technology of it. I love the upgrades in film quality, and especially love the freedom you have with a DVD player. Not just stop, rewind, fast forward and pause anymore. I also love a DVD loaded with extras and behind the scenes stuff. Those are worth owning. But I probably wouldn't buy a DVD for a movie I've never seen. Never understood doing that, does seem as DC said 'a little risky'.
At least with a DVD you can sell it after you watch it if you don't like it. If you see a bad movie at the theater you can't get anything back. Plus with the prices at theaters going up, 2 tickets = 1 DVD.
