I just ordered a 14" iBook. I got a custom model with a CD burner instead of the DVD burner. Cheaper and I didn't need the DVD burner since I have one in my desktop. I also got it outfitted with a 100GB hard drive and 1.5GB of memory. Can't wait to get it.

sorry to be the grouch, but you shouldve waited for apple to release the ibook with the intel dual core processor. If I could get out of this purchase, I really would. The new processors make a world of difference in terms of speed and plus you can boot windows and mac osx.

Woo, here is a great deal on a lappy, best of both worlds, a 1.66 core duo (or possibly 1.83) at 5.3 lbs. Performance and portability. Deal expires today: it's not the absolute best deal but it is the right computer at a good price.

    Dell E1405 Thread from fatwallet

    Direct link to dell

As stated in the fatwallet thread...

    Choose from these options -
#1 - Upgrade to 1GB ram (title config) or
    #2 - Upgrade to T2400 CPU (1.83 processor speed - my recommendation)
#3 - upgrade to WXGA+, 60GB HDD & backup CD (not as great)

to add $100 to the total price...

then checkout and enter one of these coupon codes at checkout that are found here...

Coupons for 35% off $999 laptops

Also go and buy a $35 off $300 coupon off of ebay for like $1 (usually)

and the total price comes out to...

    ~ $665

Of course if you have a Dell Preferred Account - you get 2% extra discount and if you go through fatwallet (these are extra hassles) you get 2% cash back taking the price down to about 640ish level.

    Specs:
1.83 Core Duo (the latest tech. two processors in one chip, helps multitask)
512 MB Ram (Standard Amount, will be just fine.)
Only a 40 GB HD, but you can always get an external for cheap.
    8X CD/DVD Burner
    Internal Wireless
    Ethernet capability
Windows Media Center Edition (More expensive/Windows XP plus extras)
    1yr warranty
Will probably come with a trial of Mcafee Antivirus for 3 months (after which you can always download AVG free antivirus online)

This is great deal, people might say the E1505 (15 inch screen) was a better one b/c it was at the same price, but this laptop is a pound lighter and will make all the difference (5 lbs is manageable/light, 6 lbs is heavy) - this is my final recommendation.

Actually, I have no interest in the Intel at this point. This is primarily going to be used as a music DAW (Digital Audio Workstation) and several of the primary software titles I want to use for it don't expect to have native Intel versions of their software for a year meaning I would not be able to use it for that for a while. Even Photoshop doesn't have a native version yet and Adobe says they won't have one before mid-summer.

I have ZERO interest in booting Windows on my Mac. I've been a Mac person for 15 years, so I could care less about Win.

Also, the MacBook is $600 more than the iBook and I'd prefer to spend that on a few other things that I need.

I researched the intel MacBooks, but, to be honest, I would've been okay with an older 1.2 ghz iBook if it had a big enough drive, but I couldn't find one used anywhere so I got a new one.

A lot of good stuff already posted, so I won't bother with a massive repost. If you do have more questions, check out Notebookreview.com, and more specificly their 'What Notebook Should I Buy' forum. These guys are the experts, and if you post your question there, they can pinpoint what you need. Not that the BBSers here can't.

I used to think that Dell had sub-par laptops, but I've changed my mind recently. Go with a low-end Dell laptop with a good warranty. As for software, if you download the Google Pack, it comes with all sorts of great free software, including Norton Antivirus with a free 6-month subscription. Also, if you need MS Office and know anyone who works or is a student at an educational institution, you can probably get a steep discount. I can get MS Office 2003 for $35 here at UTMB, which is about 80% off.

As far as the floppy goes, they are an added expense that not very many people need these days. Go with a USB drive. It's much bigger and will move your data faster and more safely.

    Hope that helps.

Did you even check this deal to make sure it worked before you posted it? The coupon is for SELECT PC's $999+. The other coupons they have with 25%-35% off is for REFURBISHED notebooks/pc's. If this deal was REAL I would order one right now and give my 700m to my GF.

I'd just like to post and say that I've had a Compaq laptop for 4 years now. It was a top-of-the-line model when I got it...but I've used it for a lot of different things, including some games, traveling, and usual stuff..

And it still performed fine. I would advise getting the 2-year warranty, since that seems to be about the time when one or two things might have a few issues...but they're really good about fixing everything and sending it back to you. (I had to send it in once, but that was it)

Ummm dude the deal IS REAL... the original poster of the thread i referred to had all his coupons used up, you can still buy them from ebay or (I have one hehe) and 35% off coupons are still existing on the original thread, although requests are going fast. Also the deal expires today, so if you want one you should hurry. The refurbished coupons are separate

Also, one last thing, I think it is all good and fine when people are talking about their personal experiences with computers IE Compaq/Lenovo IBM/Mac thinkpad, but honestly you can not beat dell for price/what you get. A Lenovo with the same specs as I have posted would be $1100 minimum (a full $500 more). A Compaq with similar specs would be around $800-900. While there are a few instances when you can find good deals on other brands, if you know what you are doing, you will most likely buy dell.

This isnt to say that dell computers have their drawbacks, (cheap casing,e tc., but they do a great job of cutting cost on production without sacrificing essentials,) but simply put they are the best bang for your buck, just look around and compare.

The only reason anybody wouldn't like a Mac is because they are a serious gamer. I've never met anybody that has regretted buying one. They're just flat out better than PC's, across the board. It is true that they are a little more expensive for the lower end models, but it's worth it to a lot of people.

People that don't like Macs haven't owned one (since OSX came out).

They are not just a "little" more expensive, try close to 2X the price of my listed dell.

In addition, they almost the exact same hardware as normal computers. The only difference is that their computers run Mac OSX versus Windows XP.

Mac OSX is more stable because it is based off of Unix. Mac OSX has been hacked and can be installed on PC's. The PC's run it faster than the Mac.

So no, Mac's are actually worse than PC's across the board minus a few plusses -

    1) Mac's are more aesthetically pleasing

    2) Mac's have better/more current software in multimedia video editing/audio.

So in Jeff's situation, I can see why he buys a Mac, in any other? I can't see it.

But why not just buy a PC, and install the Mac OSX? Sure it is "illegal" but the very fact that you could buy far better hardware and install the OSX shows just how much of a rip off it is.

Maybe if they were cheaper, then they could be ok.

Well, as stated above, intel chips are used in Macs... but I get your point.

First off, you're contradicting yourself. You state that they have almost exactly the same hardware yet run OSX more slowly. Does being inside an Apple case slow down the entire system? The numbers you're talking about were hacks of the Intel version of OSX before it was released being compared to Macs (I believe G4) running the Power PC OSX.

As far as price is concerned, twice is a bit of an exaggeration. As I said before though, it's good enough to to be worth it to a lot of people.

I think most anti-Mac sentimentality is the product of those that haven't actually used a Mac. I defy you to find a review of any Apple computer on the market that is anything but glowing.

But hey, if you want to lug around a chintzy piece of plastic, that's fine. You shouldn't, however, turn people off of a superior product just because you don't want to like it.

Actually, only the latest versions including the MacBook and the new Intel MiniMac have the Intel chips. The others are still PowerPC chips.

I'm not going to get off on a big Mac v. PC debate. They both have their place. I've been using Macs and working on PC's since the early 90's and my preference is Apple, but I'm obviously in the minority.

I can say that the iMac I have on my desktop has only crased twice in the two years I've owned it and I leave it running 24/7.

Mac's use a plastic casing as well, albeit a prettier one, so...

As for contradicting myself? Well only if you misunderstood that intel-based Macs will use the exact same hardware (because newer chips are faster), and that older Macs run the OSX slower.

    From WiredNews:
    Hacked Mac OSX article

No one knows exactly why OSx86 appears to be running faster on the PCs than the Mac OS does on today's Macs.

    ...

The hack shows that Steve Jobs' company will be turning out machines indistinguishable from any other PC, or "white box,"

Here's an objective review grading the Acer lappy over a Mac one from CNET:
    CNET laptop review

    One from a Mac-writer:
Performance test (used a slower than "fastest" PC)

Bottom line is this debate has gone on forever, and arguing the point is pointless, because you can't convince me and I can't convince you. But to say that Macs are superior to PC's is simply put... wrong, as it is a subjective opinion just like mine is subjective. However, I have performance/cost on my side. Aesthetics + ease of use is not equal to superior product.

Fair enough. Sometimes I can't help but get back into it for some reason. Alright then, I guess we agree to disagree.

Here is a list of the best laptops IMO according to what type of user you are:

Tech Nerd who does things my way or the high way regardless of not being compatable with 90% of other users - Apple ibook
PC user who will pay for style in order to be cooler than you - Sony
PC User who wants a good laptop and good customer support - HP
PC User who will risk saving a few bucks for piss poor customer support - Dell

Just get a Dell with an extended warranty and be done with it. If you need help with finding coupons or specs on the laptop itself, just post here, and I'm sure people can help you with it.
