I am in the market for a new laptop and would welcome any advice y'all can provide. So far I've been looking mainly at Japanese companies, Sony and Fujitsu in particular, because I've heard a lot of good things, but I'll be open to anything. Weight and screen size (as long as it's not miniscule) are not that important to me. A rough estimate of the specs I want is:

    around 2.0 GHz chip
no more than 30 GB HD
    256/512 MB memory
    DVD Rom/CDRW drive
    wireless ethernet

If anyone has any advice on specific models to consider I'd really appreciate it. Thanks in advance.

The new Sony Vaio (not sure which model name/number exactly) is really great.

It's the small, VERY lightweight one with Centrino technology.

    A few unusual specs:
It has great speakers, a very unusual and pointless camera built in; very flat keyboard, decent processing speed (nowhere near your 2 GHz, but it still runs amazingly well). Has everything else you request, however.

    I really want it.

Do you want it for business, or for fun?

For business, you should get a CPQ EVO. I use the N610C. It's a little heavier, gets a little hotter, but it runs like a freakin' horse.

It might actually be the best computer I've owned (desktop or laptop).

actually the computer you're talking about is 900 MHz, but because of the Centrino processor it runs just like a pentium4 2.0GHz...i really like this laptop too, but at $2200 i don't really think its worth it

RiceRocket1, I also really like sony vaio computers...at first i wanted a laptop, but like almost all laptops the battery only lasts 2-3 hours and while playing a DVD its even less...the centrino sony laptop lasts 7 hours i believe, but again its $2200...i decided to go with the Sony PCV-W30...it's not a laptop, but it's probably the nicest looking desktop on the market...and from what i've heard, it's the most popular computer in japan these days...here's what it looks like:

damn, last night i was thinking of starting a thread for a laptop and those are the exact specs i was going to list, right down to choosing b/t 256 and 512. so basically, thanks for starting the thread for me.

and if the price could be like 1100 or lower that would be nice. do laptops with those specs come that cheap or would i have to give up one of those to keep in my range.

    Glad to help. ;)

Right now I'm leaning towards going with the Sony VAIO V505. Looks like it will give me all I want.

Having worked for Dell and now servicing computers through Banctec, I would put my money on a Dell Laptop.

Dell's support and warranty is the industry leader, knowing this because I used to work for them and now dealing with the service and warranty that other manufacturers like HP, Compaq, Sony, Toshiba, etc..., I would definitely go with a Dell portable.

I like Dell also, look around for deals on their D600 and D500 lines.

But go with Centrino all the way. Don't let the clock speed fool you. They are much faster and outperform the higher clocked P4 - M and have much longer battery life.

Right HP is having a deal with there x1000 line of notebooks. This notebook got editors choice from CNET.

I customized a notebook with 512mb, centrino 1.4ghz, 40gb hd, 32mb video card, dvd/cd-rw, integrate 80211b around $1,250 shipped after rebate and coupon. You can always configure it to suit your needs.

Free shipping $250+ and a 10% off Coupon Code: SV7095

No they don't. They rebadge some of the best computers in the world and then summarily overprice them. :D

I can get the exact same system $3000+ system you have from powernotebooks.com for about $2300 (without paying for an OS installed). The Sager NP5670 is basically the same notebook that can be configured just about identically :

    http://www.powernotebooks.com/configurator.php3?regular_model_id=245&model_id=220

The Sager NP5670 isn't even the top of the line Sager... Alienware ain't as cutting edge as they'd like you to believe. ;)

First make sure that you go when they are having half price dances or dollar dances... Also the buffets are good. It is also advisable to get them to dance for you when a long song by Tool or a remix of Lapdance by NERD comes on....

    huh? what? lapTOPS?

    OH MY BAD!!

I thought it said advise about lapDANCES.

Sorry... Gigs and megabytes and gigaflops and all that rubbish... :D
