Okay... so I've only really ever done one BBS which is this one. So you know from time to time I see people write "PWND", and I always figured it meant "owned" from context... but today I was talking to my friend who plays Unreal on line a lot and it came up, so I finally had it explained to me.

l337 is like e-leet or elite.

my question is this... how did this start? and what are the usage rules?

    What she said. Plus:

The term "leet" comes from the word "elite". Leet can be either pronounced as "leet" (monosyllabic, rhymes with "meat") or by pronouncing the L separate from the rest of the word as "el eat" (elite). The most probable explanation of its origin is from bulletin board systems (BBS's) in the 1980s and early 1990s where having "elite" status on a BBS allowed a user access to file areas, games, and special chat rooms, often including archives of pirated software, p*rnography, and text files of dubious quality documenting topics such as how to construct explosives and manufacture illegal drugs. It may also have developed to defeat text filters created by BBS sysops for message boards to discourage the discussion of forbidden topics (such as cracking).

huh? how comes we don't get those perks anymore? games and special chat rooms sound cool.

cracking: hacking programs you are supposed to pay for, but get for free by deciphering the registration code, by patching files, and finding other loopholes.

not that I would know about any of this....

Using l337 speak (especially on a bbs like this one) is a good way to sound like a 10-year-old.

There are lot of people here (including me) who will object to such jargon (either politely, or impolitely).
