Knee Problem

    Recently I've developed a problem with my left knee. Going to try and arrange an appointment, but won't be doing so till next week. It hurts after heavy exercise, after which a bump on the outside of my knee swells up. What is this? Have I torn something? Am trying to look this up online, but get every confused and I know people here have had various knee injuries!

    Pretty tough to say without details. Bump on the outside of the knee where? How much does it swell up? What kind of exercise? (weight-training/running/something else) Could possibly be ITBS (runner's knee), but tough to tell from that..

    Try to lie on the side opposite of the knee that hurts. If you do a leg extension, and the knee hurts on the bottom joint, it's the meniscus. If it hurts as you're extending it, it's the ligaments. Either way, if it is too painful to do this, DON'T DO IT. :)

    I had a endomeniscectomy, where my meniscus was repaired. The only pain I experienced was that I couldn't squat all the way like a catcher would, and it would hurt like a b*tch to return to normal. This was caused by the bones grinding, so they did some smoothening of the cartilage while they were at it.

    Hope it goes well for you, man. Google or wiki-search for meniscus tear or ligament tear and knee stuff.

    How long before the bump goes away? Are you fine after it goes away? Is the heavy lifting the only thing that causes the bump to form or are their other things you do that will make it swell?

    I had surgery twice on my Knee, both the same knee and both time my meniscus. They knee would just get locked, and i couldn't move it anymore, untill it unpoped, and it hurted very bad :(.

    What type of excersice did you do? running straight? turning a lot(like with basketbal), or lifting things? do you jump a lot?

    If you touch the bump does it hurt? is the bump hot?

    I'm getting ready for probable surgery on a torn meniscus. My knee has been bothering me off and on for 4 years now. It constantly clicks, pops, locks, and generally hurts. I've been experiencing a pain where it feels like its gonna pop out of place (kind of like when your elbow pops) but never does.


    It sucks.

    I had/have a similar issue that developed after I stopped being active after high school/college and tried to start back up seven to eight years later. My knee would ache like someone hit the side of my kneecap in a specific spot. I had no clue what was going on...so I visited the doctor and after taking x-rays, they detected that the little ball on the corner of my kneecap is actually in two pieces...so because I had put on extra weight from earlier in life, the grinding between the two pieces was causing an irritation. The condition is called bipartite patella. I still have the problem, but after losing weight and doing extra stretching, the aching is at a minimum. It's a genetic condition where the only two options are leaving as is or getting the extra piece removed, which would require months of rehab (bleh).

    Could it be Osgood Slatters? I had this when I was in High School.

    An example of such a situation is Osgood Slatters Syndrome. This syndrome is common in boys who play soccer and shows as pain and inflammation below the knee. This is due to lack of flexibility in the quadriceps, and stress placed on an area called the Tibial Tuberosity, which is where the quadriceps attach to the Tibia. If this is not treated correctly, it can develop into more serious knee problems.

    From my understanding, usually Osgood-Schlatters causes a bump on the tibial tuberosity (the bumpy part of your shin right below your kneecap). Although, I'm sure it could affect the outside of the knee also.


    I'd go see a doc.

    Hmm.. thanks for the comments.

    If you run your hand along the outside of the leg you hit the bump at the knee. It hurts after heavy exercise or heavy lifting. I'm not overweight, but I've been trying to get fit for football (soccer) for next year and have notice that losing a couple of kilos and adding strength to my legs lessens the pain. Still, though, the bump is always there though there is light swelling after the above activities. I thought I had this problem a while back, but due to not doing any form of exercise I thought it had gone as I didn't notice any pain at all. There is no locking or inability to move.

    Been looking this up online, maybe it's the proximal tibiofibular joint? Has anyone had problems with this? Not too sure if that's it! Need to see a doc though, definitely...
