Going ballistic, confronting someone face-to-face and getting physical in that situation is understandable. But to break into a guy's house at 3:40 a.m. with a ski mask on while he is sleeping is pretty jerky. And it's pure speculation as to why Snyder did this. There may have been no logical reason.

A former NBA basketball player now living in the Tri-State is arrested for a burglary and beating that left a Warren County man hospitalized.

Kirk Snyder is now playing basketball in China, but early Monday morning police say he broke into a townhouse in the Beacon Hill community and beat a resident in his bed.

The Warren County Sheriffs Office responded to the burglary call.

Caller: "Please help us, my neighbor came and broke into my house and attacked my husband. His jaw, I think it's broken."
Dispatcher:" And he just ran through the glass?"
Caller: " He broke right through the glass. He's like seven feet tall and he beat my husband. Please hurry. My husband's not in good shape."

Kirk Snyder lives five doors from the victims. Beacon Hill subdivision is new-- and the few people who live here say they rarely saw the former NBA star because he was overseas playing basketball.

But, at a recent party in the clubhouse-- neighbors say Snyder dropped by and, the victim got to know him.

Caller: "We just met him the other day and we befriended him."

Medics rushed the victim to the hospital. Neighbors say in the brief time they knew Snyder-- they never thought he could be violent.

Caller: "Oh, my God. Oh, I don't understand. We were so kind to him and friendly."

Police say Snyder didn't steal anything while he was inside of the house. Investigators say they don't know why Snyder allegedly broke into the home and beat the victim.

According to the NBA, Kirk Snyder played professionally for four years. He is originally from California. Neighbors didn't know why Snyder now makes his home in Deerfield Township.

Investigators are not identifying the hospitalized victim.

I've heard that Snyder was always an off kilter crazy type. This doesn't surprise me that it was him.

dude showed character issues on the court before. I remember when we played the Jazz and he was heckling the Rockets Bench and JVG was livid.

Still, this is a very bizarre story. I'm in awe.

Maybe he found out that dude is cheating on his wife with Snyder's wife. It could be anything. I'll wait to hear more details before I pass judgment. It just sucks when a negative story breaks out, whether its a celeb or regular joe, most people have already made up their mind about that person regardless of how much real information is known about the situation. That person could be 100 % innocent but to some people, all it takes is a headline to make that person 100% guilty.

Unless this was Snyder's twin brother, they caught him red handed. Doesn't matter what the motivation for him to do something like this was, it's against the law and bizarre.

Psych evaluation order for ex-NBA player arrested

DEERFIELD TWP. — Bond was set at $500,000 and a psychiatric evaluation was ordered Tuesday, March 31, for former NBA player Kirk Snyder, who is accused of breaking in a home and assaulting a Deerfield Twp. man.

Snyder, 25, was arrested early Monday at his residence at 5357 Commonwealth Drive in the Beacon Hill Townhouses. He was charged with aggravated burglary and felonious assault.

Snyder's attorney, Hal Arenstein, entered a not guilty plea during the arraignment in Mason Municipal Court. Snyder was also ordered to undergo a psychiatric evaluation and was placed under suicide watch.

Mason Prosecutor Robert Peeler said Snyder allegedly attacked another inmate in the Warren County Jail Monday night and "the combined violent outbursts are a cause of concern."

Around 3:40 a.m., a resident at 5387 Commonwealth Drive heard glass breaking downstairs in her townhouse. When she got up to investigate, a tall person pushed her aside and ran to the upstairs bedroom, where he began to assault her sleeping husband, authorities said.

While the man was beating her husband, the woman pulled away a hood covering his head and he then fled out the back door, sheriff deputies said. Peeler said the victim received physical injuries from the alleged assault by Snyder.

The investigation and a canine track led to Snyder's nearby residence, where he was taken into custody within minutes of the offense, sheriff deputies said.

Magistrate Eddie Lawson set a preliminary hearing in Mason Municipal Court for 1 p.m. April 16, during the video arraignment as Snyder sat in the Warren County Jail. Snyder will have to wear a GPS unit if he is release from jail, according to the magistrate's order.

Snyder’s demeanor was enough to cause concern for his lawyer and even the prosecutor in Mason Municipal Court.

Both agreed that a psychological evaluation should done immediately to help determine how the affable, quiet basketball player turned into an unprovoked attacker who has become violent enough in jail that he was forced to wear leg shackles and handcuffs in a secure jail room.

Defense lawyer Hal Arenstein said Snyder has refused to speak to him. He told Magistrate Eddie Lawson he’s concerned about Snyder’s competency.

“This behavior seems to be totally out of character for him,” Arenstein said of the attack.

He entered not guilty pleas on Snyder’s behalf to charges of aggravated burglary and felonious assault.

...Arenstein said Snyder has lived in the Cincinnati area for about the last 18 months. He was drawn to the area because an uncle lives here, he said. His wife and children also are in the area, but Snyder was not living with them, police said.
