1.7 million people voted for the gay marriage ban Consitutional Amendment. 1.8 million people voted for Tony Sanchez for Governor in 2002. 1.9 million people voted for Ron Kirk for Senator in 2002. There were over 12.5 million registered voters in Texas in November of 2005. While that is a lot of people who voted for the gay marriage ban (especially since turnout for the special election was obviously lower than in the 2002 race), I don't know that it means someone who is for gay marriage can't get elected. Is it likely? I certainly wouldn't say that. But it's not impossible (and whoever wins in November is going to have at least as many people who voted against gay marriage voting against him/her). Now, I don't think he will get elected. I don't think he'll come close. But elections that go against the normal political grain are always about getting the right message at the right time that energizes a significant portion of the electorate (especially people who don't normally vote or who weren't previously registered). And I agree that it doesn't seem to make sense to make it such a visible part of his campaign because it certainly makes for something else he has to overcome (and, like everyone said, it's not like he could do anything about the ban even if he were to win).
I support Kinky for governor. I really think he would be a great governor. And besides, it's Texas. We really need a governor that wears a cowboy hat. I highly doubt Strayhorn is going to make much of an impact. She is blatantly trying to copy Ann Richards' image and I don't like her doing that.
well, it's obvious that more people turn out for governor elections than special elections. i think chosing that stat of how many people voted is reaching. if almost 2 million voters go out and vote against something like that in a special election, it's obviuos that you can count that and MORE in a governor election. regardless, him saying that is going to do nothing but HURT his chances. i don't see how it helps.
True, but there's also the off-chance that, unlike career politicians, the guy actually believes that what he's saying is right instead of just running out and saying whatever he thinks will get him elected. I'm voting Kinky.
i understand. if that's what he believes then okay, i'm glad he's being upfront and honest, lord knows we need more politicians like that. but, at the same time he is hurting himself. being completely honest in politics can be a double edged sword.
You are correct Aces, it's not a non-biased site. I'm not a non-biased poster. It's politics. People have politics. No matter how funny people are, they still have politics. Politics matter.
Kinky is running his campaign like it's a hobby. Not like he wants to be governor. Another Perry term...
I don't care if he hasn't voted much in the past. I dont care if he did drugs, drank, got blowjobs in the past either. I don't care that Hakeem didn't grow up playing basketball, he played pretty good when he started to. What exactly don't you like about his ideas and stances? All I know is what is from his website and it sounded ok. Are you afraid he is going to be a Nadar for the dems in the election?
I too could care less about his drug use or sexual appetites. I care about his politics. His politics are that of a moderate Republican, and I don't trust him. He says he supports gay marriage but he didn't bother voting against the Amendment. I don't trust that. He says he supported Clinton and Ann Richards but didn't bother voting for either. (He did bother voting for George W. Bush). Please inform me as to what his "ideas and stances" are, besides merely jokes and sound bites?
Wow, three pages and not one mention of his plan to build a wall across the border to Mexico. I'm not sure I'd call Kinky a Republican, but he's closer to an R than a D and he's certainly a Bush fan. I'm not even sure I'd support him over Strayhorn, let alone over Gammage. From everything I've read, Gammage is the real deal. I understood "throwing away" a vote for Nader over Gore. But I don't understand how any progressive, liberal or Democrat could vote Kinky when you have a great candidate in Gammage.
what plan is that? the only border plan i heard him talking about was to divide the border in to 5 sections, appoint mexican generals to each section, and give them a million dollars each. everytime we catch an illegal trying to cross in that generals section, they take money away. thats funny, he said this: He was originally for the war in Iraq, he said, and argued with Willie Nelson about it. "He's a tyrannical bully," he told Nelson, "and we got to take him out." "No," he says Nelson objected, "he's our president, and we got to stick by him." http://peacecorpsonline.org/messages/messages/2629/2018064.html
I would vote for Kinky, because he has the best ideas on education I have heard. I believe that is something he is very sincere about. Political appointments in education decisions have been rotten. Putting more money into paying teachers, getting rid of a lot of the standardized testing, and having real teachers and people who have been in the classroom making the decisions would be a great thing. That is the kind of talk from a gov. I like. That is probably the most or one of the most important issues, and regardless of some areas where I may disagree with Kinky, he is on the money with this one.
If his school finance reform plan doesnt work, then all that stuff won't really matter. say hello to state-wide privatization..
Heh, it was his education platform that turned me off the most. Getting rid of standardized tests makes zero sense to me, and paying higher salaries without addressing teacher's unions won't fix anything. This platform to me is your classic non- risky, feel- good platform that accomplishes nothing. To each his own. If he wanted to be like Schwarzeneger [sic] or Ventura, he had to come out with some controversial reforms that would make people take notice. But we don't have an energy crisis, or a budget crisis, or even an immigration crisis like California does.
Because it's a vote against the status quo of both Republicans and Democrats, and because he's an old friend!
