Too bad he won't get any playing time when Bibby comes back.

    Kings Sign Jones

SACRAMENTO, CA ---- Sacramento Kings President, Basketball Operations Geoff Petrie announced today that the team has signed guard Damon Jones as an unrestricted free agent. Per club policy, terms of the contract were not disclosed.

A four-year NBA veteran, Jones averaged 5.1 points, 2.1 assists and 1.5 rebounds per game last season through 67 contests for the Detroit Pistons, while shooting .401 from the field, .371 from beyond the arc and .729 from the free throw line. From a statistical standpoint, his best season occurred during the 2000-01 campaign when he averaged 6.5 points (.409 FG%, .364 3pt%, .712 FT%), 3.2 assists and 1.5 rebounds per game over 71 outings as a member of the Vancouver Grizzlies. Jones split time between the Golden State Warriors and Dallas Mavericks, averaging 4.2 points, 1.7 assists and 1.0 rebounds per game in 55 contests, during the 1999-00 season. He played in 24 games with the New Jersey Nets and Boston Celtics as a rookie in 1998-99.

“Damon Jones brings some additional speed, quickness and long-range shooting to our backcourt,” said Petrie. “He played a solid role for Detroit last year during the regular season and playoffs. Given our current injury situation and his experience, we feel that this gives us some additional legitimate depth at our guard position to get ready for the rest of the preseason and regular season.”

In addition to his NBA experience, Jones has played professionally in the International Basketball Association (Black Hills Posse, 1997-98) and Continental Basketball Association (Idaho Stampede, 1998-99). He was named CBA Newcomer of the Year and CBA All-League First Team in 1999. Jones also led the CBA with 120 three-point field goals made and 336 attempted during the 1998-99 campaign.

Jones enjoyed a three-year collegiate career at the University of Houston where he amassed career averages of 12.9 points, 4.0 rebounds and 3.9 assists per game over 81 outings, but was not drafted by an NBA team.

He's not gonna get any PT- and how do you think this makes Mateen Cleaves and Brent Price feel? LOL! Once he heard of the signing, I can just imagine Price saying, "That's it! I retire!" and he grabs his stuff and leaves. :D

Jones has speed and can light it up when he's hot. Kinda like Bobby Jackson, only less talented. Price is still on a NBA roster?

The Kings need more big men, a true 7 footer to back up Vlade.

Why? Bibby is the one that's injured.

Vlade has missed a grand total 3 games in the last 4 seasons and they have added 6-11 Keon Clark who can probably defend the post against the Ostertags, Drobnjaks, Cambys, Tsakalides's and Nesterovics of the West.

Further, Webber did a very credible job against Shaq during the playoffs. They have two rookie centers in camp (6-11 & 6-10) and aren't likely to keep either.

I can't think of a single 7' foot Free Agent, who costs less than their $1m exception and who can play at the level of Pollard and Clark. Perhaps you can?

I want to see Damon Jones get picked up by a team that's going to use him. I think he can be a pretty good contributor off the bench and is worthy of a backup pg role.
