I will avoid this specific situation, because it is a bit of casting pearls before swine. Y'all really don't care what religious people think but want opportunities to denigrate them for their faith.

The true core of this story has nothing to do with her but with Judicial overreach. BTW, she broke no law.

I'm not surprised that no one on the bbs is arguing on her behalf. There's no argument to be made on her behalf. Even the most frustrating stubborn conservative posters here wouldn't see anything redeemable about a government worker unwilling to do her job. It's not really a gay marriage issue anymore -- it's a do your damn job issue.

But, I will do my best. The first thing I'd say is that it's unfortunate that the only remedy we have here is jail time and not a rapid termination of her employment. It looks a little ridiculous to jail someone for refusing to do paperwork.

The second is that you could look at this through a Rosa Parks lens -- that this is simple civil disobedience in obvious violation of the law simply to make your voice heard. If she simply resigned, it may have been more 'principled' but no one would have noticed. By making a big fuss, by metaphorically handcuffing herself to the building, she makes sure everyone knows she protests this gay marriage thing. It falls into the proud tradition of our civil rights fights for equality. Except in this case, she's fighting for inequality and not many people are likely to ever be sympathetic.

    How is it judicial overreach?

She did break the law. Refusing a court order is illegal. That is a law.

In all of these cases, these same Christian dbags would be screaming bloody murder. They do not want equal treatment. They want preferential treatment...and it's crystal clear at this point.

I have no desire to do anything of the sort. Far from it actually.

But, I would like to see you elaborate more on this.

Supposedly her contention was that for any marriage license out of her office her name gets stamped/printed on it, violating her Christian concious. She's ok with her staff issuing them if her name is not required on the document.

She's actually requested the state legislature change the document so that the clerk's names are no longer on the marriage licenses. They don't meet again until next year though and the governor has said it would cost too much to call a special session.

I'm in the do your job or step down camp.

Or maybe some of us are religious people who are tired of seeing a vocal minority denigrate our faith in the public eye through their own ignorance and pettiness.

i wonder if she used her phone call to inform her boss she wouldn't be going to work... no call no show = fired at many corporations in America.

If an elected official cant be fired, can she be impeached? Tax money is paying the salary for this dimwit that refuses to do her job.

If she wants a special session to get her name removed from marriage licenses, i think they should also discuss how to deal with elected officials that refuse to do what they were elected to do.

People are denigrating her for being a bigot. Not for being religious.
Sometimes there is a clear overlap and in this case there is.

In this case, that's (at best) shaky grounds for termination. Like 500 pound person on a barstool shaky. lol

I agree, but she could have, and there would be no problem.

Is there no method of recalling or removing her from her position?

It has to come from the (republican majority) state legislature. And you know they ain't wading into that quicksand

Hell I would commend them for it. There's very little I hate worse than the religious left (they call themselves the religious right, but let's face it, when you want government to enforce morality on others....you aren't exactly right)

    /thread

It's really that simple. This whole thing is pretty cut-n-dry.

This story should not have been big news in the first place. I'm not surprised it took this long for a thread to get started on here. There is nothing to debate. There is no legit controversy.

    Kim Davis should resign. Period.

Sorry, had no idea you were a religious person from the tone of your posts in here. Please continue.
