Just curious on peoples thoughts on him. As most of us know, the Clippers are looking to get rid of Kaman or Randolph. While yes, he is ugly as sin, he could be a great backup for Yao. 7 foot, 27 years old, 5 years exp. He has had injury problems the past couple seasons, but he wouldnt be playing as many minutes, since he would be a backup for Yao. Contract for 3 more season, starting at 10mil, 11, 12. Would we be able to get him? Do we want him?
no, he's injury prone and makes too much. it's pointless to pay the 2nd most salary to a player that would be a backup.
If it was not for his ridiculous contract that runs for 3 more years, He could have been a great back up and insurance for Yao when and if Yao gets injured again. ( Hope Not )
kaman is actually a legit low post presence and does command double teams. he's just inconsistent so he's not worth that much. but $8-9 mil is good for him considering the lack of scoring centers in today's game. he will never back up anybody.
Although Camby is older, He plays better defense which the Rockets need. His offense is not that bad but right now as the need for a back up center, The Rockets would be lucky to get Camby.
Interestingly, BDavis and Camby might be acceptable to Rox (for TMac [+ Lowry?]) while BD and Kamen might be acceptable to Clips. I wonder if there is a deal somewhere in there?
I don't know a ton about his game to be honest, his body looks like that of someone that is strictly a Center. But is he capable of playing some 4? If so I'm all for it, my ideal scenario is getting someone that can play the 4 with Yao in the game and the 5 with Scola in the game effectively. Someone that could get 16 mpg at the 4, 16 mpg at the 5, give Scola and Yao each 32 mpg and keeping them fresh. But once again, that's my ideal scenario.
If/when healthy he is certainly a starter. he's probably still slightly overpaid even then, unless if/when healthy, he proves he can be what he was in 07-08. I never liked his attitude all that much, and he is ugly as sin, but he had a pretty credible argument for being a top 3-5 center that year, the only knock being his FG%, which wasn't where you wanted it. But he scored 16 a game, grabbed 13 boards, 2 assists and shockingly 2.8 blocks per game. His FG% of 48%, though, really needed to be higher. In fact, he's only a career 49% shooter, only going over 50% in a season twice, and not by much. For a decently mobile and skilled seven footer in today's NBA, that's pretty sad. So of the choice between Camby and Kaman, it's pretty obvious. Camby is the more consistent rebounder and shot blocker, isn't as concerned about scoring, which is a plus, and only has 1 year left on a contract at $7.6 million whereas Kaman has 3 years at $10.4 million +. And both are a better option then Zach Randolph. Good luck with that Clippers. But if some of the other aspects of whatever trade was proposed was tempting enough and I was forced to take Kaman back, that's be ok. Outside Yao, the team's frontcourt is so devoid of size it's laughable. And while you don't have to have hall of famers or even all-stars in your frontcourt to win championships, you do need at a minimum solid role players there that are big, can defend, rebound, play their role, etc. Just look at past champions. Here's an interesting question. Would anyone do: Baron Davis, Chris Kaman, Clippers 2010 Unprotected 1st Round Pick for T-Mac or Baron Davis, Zach Randolph, Clippers 2010 Unprotected 1st Round Pick for T-Mac, Cook, Brent Barry (for salaries to match) The Clippers might scoff at the first one, even though it is an amazing salary dump for them. They'd probably jump all over the second one. Anything to get rid of Randolph's salary and just get rid of him in general. The allure for the Rockets, obviously, is that while they take back a crap-load of large, bloated, long-term contracts, both Baron and Randolph do at least produce statistically, Baron has had playoff success, and if it all doesn't work out, you undoubtedly have a top 5 pick in what is hopefully a better draft.
I really hate the idea of getting Baron Davis for some reason. But then again I'm a big Brooks/Lowry supporter....unless we get Rubio
Big men are worth alot, just look at some previous contracts, to name a few: Jerome James, Eddy Curry, Kelvin Cato, Dampier, Bynum. These guys get paid but I don't think they deserve it. They just don't seem to produce to warrant that much cash but they keep getting paid... weird.
The only thing that dogs kaman is his health. Now that's a big deal, but if I knew he was healthy, I would make a play for him. He's a better player than scola and landry. Of course he makes more because of his production. I've always said that the guy opposite of yao should be either a tim thomas/charlie v type or a camby type. Well kaman is a camby type , but better offensively. He can score low with both hands, good rebounder and shot blocker. If they wanted scola, cook, barry, and dorsey for kaman and jordan, I would do it. That would allow the rockets to always have a legit post player on the court and still have a guy like jordan in development. It also makes your team diversified in its attack because now when yao sits, you can push tempo and still have a guy who can score down low.
I don't know how Kaman would fare as a back up. Yao plays anywhere from 30 - 35 mpg so Kaman would be getting 15mpg????? Does anyone know if he can play Power Forward?????
I like his game, I would take him. I think he is mobile enough to play the 4. Having both him and Yao and being able to keep both under 30 minutes a game would probably do wonders for thier health.
Yao needs to be playing no more than 30 in the regular season. Kaman isn't mobile enogugh to play pf with Yao in. I do agree, he is a little pricy for a center, you also have to remember he is like Yao insurance. If/when Yao gets injured, we already have a starting cal player for center. Plus, I personally think we need to keep yaos minutes to 30 during the regular season so we have him come playoff time. With a better than avg backup, it won't be hard playing without him.
