Today is June 19th - Juneteenth, celebrated by the black community as the day on which the news of the Emancipation Proclamation reached Texas. Considering the game we all love is totally dominated by players of African descent, we ought to acknowledge this day. (And for all the other reasons, too.) Props to the brothers and sisters out there. ------------------
Yes, Happy Juneteenth everyone! There is a big free celebration beginning at 1PM today at Miller Outdoor Theatre, with barbecue, music & things for the kids to do. But you'd better bring a big can of OFF because the mosquitos are thick. I should be out there after I get off work today. ------------------ "Blues is a Healer" --John Lee Hooker
I knew there was a reason I was leaving work early today! Juneteenth, yeah thats it! BTW what kinda entertainment is going on at the Miller Outdoor?! ------------------ "Beware the lollipop of mediocrity. Lick once and you suck forever."
I believe Grady Gaines & the Texas Upsetters will be going on around 7, and then a couple of more bands after that. Blues & Zydeco. ------------------ "Blues is a Healer" --John Lee Hooker

Happy Juneteenth !!!! ------------------ "norm, would you like to buy an indian scalp ? This deal isn't gonna make or break me Norm, so don't jerk me around." Harry Carey "Norm, if I had a mohawk scalp, I wouldn't be sitting here talking to you."
PinetreeFM60, "...all the other reasons..." gets honorable mention? If we were all hockey fans (ugh, the horror), would we be less obliged "to acknowledge this day"? Sorry to get too literal. You seem to have had your heart in the right place. I just didn't like the way that was worded.... It just reminds me of when I went to Virginia and a friend of mine told me to be careful because many of the people at the school we were visiting were racists. Then we went to a couple of parties, and most of them had bands comprised of Blacks. So, I questioned him. He said, "Well, they accept them, because they're 'entertainers'." Outside of them being in a band singing at a party the very same people would not be associated with at all. It seems to me that anyone who regards the emancipation of slaves as positive should be celebrating Juneteenth, regardless of their affinity or dislike of certain sports, or singers, or even individuals. You misread me, Dreamer. This is a BASKETBALL FORUM, so that was my nexus for broaching Juneteenth. Maybe you should read the thread I started about pre 1970 NBA records being meaningless because they occurred before the league was properly intergrated, to gain some insight in where I'm coming from. But I can observe without preaching. This was my way of gently reminding everyone of an ugly part of American history and the day on which the vanquishing of that ugliness is celebrated in Texas. I always remind people to acknowledge the importance of Juneteenth. My "all the other reasons" was intended to acknowledge those reasons without getting up on MY soapbox about it. I figured there would be at least one person who found fault with the wording, and I was not disappointed. ------------------
Happy Juneteenth. A monumental day in the history of the US, originating in our very own Galveston, TX.
