Legend has it that Houston twice shied away from trading Ralph Sampson -- once to Portland for the No. 2 pick in '84 (which could have been Jordan) and again to the Bulls for Jordan after the '85-86 season.

The Rockets, however, stuck with Sampson until 1987. By then, all they could get for him was Joe Barry Carroll and Sleepy Floyd.

We're not making this up, just scratching our heads after finding this Sam Smith story from The Chicago Tribune in 1998:

Houston Just Missed Dynasty; Had The Rockets Been Willing To Trade Ralph Sampson, Jordan Could Have Ended Up in Houston

Can you believe that.....we would have won so many titles with Jordan and Hakeem.

yeah, it was the greatest dynasty that "could of been." Not only did Portland offer the #2 pick for Ralph, but they also had Clyde the Glyde added. Man, man oh man...all three of them for their whole careers. Imagine that...too many possibilities.

But for all you know, Jordan, living in Houston, could have become completely addicted to Goode Company BBQ and porked out, therefore ruining the career of what could have been an all-star.

then he and Clyde's mom would have gotten in a huge feud, the team would have been torn asunder, and Hakeem would have decided that maybe soccer was the way to go.
