No other details on his death were immediately available. Buchsbaum, who worked out of his home in Brooklyn, was a contributing editor for the magazine based in Riverwoods, Ill. Buchsbaum made the NFL draft his life's work and compiled preview guides that were highly regarded in football circles. Often seen at draft-related functions and the NFL scouting combine, Buchsbaum regularly did radio shows on KTRH (740 AM).
This completely sucks! He was one of the soundest judges of NFL talent I have ever heard, or read. Great loss. RIP
I always used to make fun of Buschbaum because of his goofy voice, but damn... Dying at 48 really makes me feel my own mortality. RIP Joel Buschbaum
Damn, I just heard John McLain mention this on the radio this morning. Very sad news. I loved his work on AM radio back in the early 90s. He was the most informative NFL man I'd ever heard. RIP
Crap. I grew up listening to Joel on KTRH. The guy was a human database of information on college prospects. Talk about being devoted to work - the guy could give you strengths and weaknesses of some of the more obscure players on some of the more obscure teams in college football.
I was suprised when I heard this on the radio too. I always remember my favorite expression of his: (Insert player's name here) runs a 4.4 40 (in thick NY accent).
I'm not the biggest fan of football, but the guy was sort of appealing. I remember a Chronicle or some other article on him. If I remember he did it all out of a small one bedroom or perhaps one room apt. in NYC. surrounded by clippings and mountains of videotapes. He was almost like an obsessive clutchcityposter who goes on to make this his life's work.
It was funny when somebody would call in and have something wrong from the following: 1) Player's name 2) Graduation year 3) Agent's name 4) Height and/or weight 5) Physical ability (40 yard speed, vertical jump, weightbench reps etc) 6) etc and Joel would figure out who they meant, give the correct info and answer the caller's original question. He was quite informed about baseball and would talk about that too if the conversation wandered that way. He was............................<i>Good People</i>.
