As some of you know, I'm starting a new job in The Woodlands on December 18th. Since the turnaround from my old job to this one is short, they will offer me temporary housing in addition to relocation. However, they are still working on exactly what the temporary housing/relocation package will be. I don't know if they will give me a lump sum, reimbursement, or if they will arrange the movers and temporary housing themselves. My question is, would it be bad for me to just ask them to give me a lump sum? I would prefer that over them arranging everything. That way, I have a say in where I stay, who I move with, etc. What do you think?
Most companies, work with relocation companies to help them find a location for you. You might have a say in the area you want to stay in if they are in deed working with a relo company. I'm not sure if this is what they are doing but, just throwing ideas out there.
Yeah, plus unless you like planning those things out it might be easier to just let a relocation company do all that thinking. I'm sure you got enough going on already.
My side of it is that I could save a lot of money if I did everything on my own. I'm sure the relocation company will charge my company an arm and a leg. I'd rather they just give me the money. That way, I could get it all done and have some money leftover as a reward to myself. Would it be bad for me to come out and ask for a lump sum? I'm starting in a week and the company hasn't done anything yet in regards to providing temporary housing and arranging relocation.
If you do it yourself they might just have you show them receipts and expense it. You will save your company money but might not be able to pocket anything for your effort. But if there is only a week left I definitely would get on somebody to do something.
