well my gf is going for a job interview.
and here are the dreaded questions.

    -whats your pay rate?
    -are you working right now?
-are you available immediately or need 2 weeks?

of course on the pay rate she wants to aim high. once you get in, usually you will only make a 50 cent or dollar raise here and there. entry is where you make your real money.

as far as working right now, i told her to say she works for her family (nanny) and runs her own online business. that way she is available right away, but the dont have her cornered with a low salary thinking she needs a job.

any suggestions before the big interview?

Best way to handle the pay question is to ask what the range they are looking from a qualified candidate. A lot of times they'll just tell you straight up. If they do, then just give them the high range of whatever they say.

I always hated the infamous "what are some of your weaknesses" question. Somehow, they never really believed me when I told them my main weakness was being a workaholic...

The best answer is to say what you are looking for - you should already have an idea of their range before you even go to the interview.

My best response was to say that my weakness was that I was very competitive, especially with my brother. For whatever reason, employers don't see envy as a weakness.

What kind of job is it? How much is she making now? What is the pay range of the new job? Is she applying for a CFO position or a cashier position?

    Need more information.

I think the 50 cent or dollar raise comment pretty much ruled out CFO.

Sometimes I get a chuckle out of 'kryptonite and whores'. But oddly enough not everyone thinks kryptonite is funny.

In one of my HR management classes in college, we reviewed the top 10 worst interview questions asked. They are questions that do not reveal anything about your work ethic, personality, or ability. The number 1 cruddy interview question was "What is your biggest weakness?" 99% of the time the answer is something that would not actually be considered a weakness. I'm a workaholic. I'm a perfectionist. I don't know when to quit, ect.

Go to Monster Interview Center. There they have a section on interviewing tips which worked great for me. They asked almost all of the questions that were covered in Monster. Job search and interviewing can be very stressfull, as I just got over it over a month ago. The biggest thing is to have confidence and be HONEST. As far as the salary thing, just give an amount that is slightly above your range (ex: your range $15-20/hr, say between $18-25/hr). I got lucky b/c I asked for what I thought was a high # and they offered a whole lot more, but that doesn't tend to happen. Good luck to your gf.

Here is my advice. Do the research on how much people make for that job and ask for the high end. If you ask for a low amount then the people will question your abilities. It is kind of like someone trying to sell you a rolex for a hundred bucks. It raises an alarm. If the amount is more then they can afford but the still want you, they will offer you a job anyway.
