Hi, I need some advices here. I would really appreciate any inputs from all of the seasoned professionals on clutchfans :)

I have been working as a temp in my current company for half a year now. Recently, they have asked about my interest in joining them permanently. I have verbally said I am interested and pretty negotiating on the amount. It has been ongoing for a week or so (becuz the supervisor was on vacation for a week).

However, today, I am getting a call from another company. They will be doing a background check on me and if everything goes well, they will extend me an offer. I really want this job more than my current position.

Would it be ok for me to back out of changing to perm in my current place now?

Since you havent found out what the current job will offer you and the new job still hasnt given you an offer, you are in a good position. See if you can get a number from one of them and see what the other has to say. If you are worth it, maybe theyll go for it.

I have found out a number from the current job... I just have been asking for a higher number. So we are still negotiating.

The new one just come by today, so I haven't got a number from them yet.

one thing about business is that is just as ugly as politics. if they want and need you they'll treat you good but if they can replace you cheaply they'll treat you like crap.

anyway, if they were in your position they would not take a verbal agreement too strongly, theyd just hire whoever was better for the job and posibly cheaper.

in your case find the job thats better for you and for the best wage. there is no problem with having a couple of companies bid for your services. thats what bussiness is all about. loyalty is overrated.

If you're just a lowly pencil pusher and not a bigwhig or someone making a killing on commissions, then I always say skate by and try to do as little as possible for as long as you can.

It depends if you really are a lowly pencil pusher...

My advice is go where the money is at.

I wouldn't say back out. Saying no thanks before you have another offer in hand would be dumb (obviously). Can you accept the perm position and quit the next day? Yes.

Scruples? They'd fire you the next day if it was better for them.

If you can work the timing better by delaying the first company until the second is ready, you can have two offers at the same time and try to bid the price up. If you say yes to the original company, it'll be hard to ask for a raise a week later.

Go for both jobs and do what is in your best interest. Use your current job as leverage when negotiating for a better salary.

Do a one of those sit com routines where you work at both places at the same time.

    Thanks JuanValdez

so until the company and I have agreed on a salary number, I haven't officially accepted anything right?

I guess I will try to delay the first company. Because I am a little worried too until I actually see an offer from the second company.

Seriously, once everything is confirmed at the new job, just tell your current job that you got a better offer. It's business bro.

The only other consideration is that you have no idea what type of atmosphere the new job is. You could get over there and it's dick head city.

just realize that they don't care about you in the end--they would do what's best for their financial concerns. So you need to do what's best for you overall. If you haven't signed anything, you're not committed. Things happen, things change..

definitely delay the 1st until you get an offer from the 2nd. Compare 2 definite things and make a choice. Don't choose a hypothetical over a definite

that's a great idea. Like when they have a date with two different girls in the same restaurant?

The 2 companies actually locate around the same area, so maybe I can work an hour at one place, and then run 20 min to the the other place to work another hour.

    +1 :D :D

My suggestion is to see where both of them go. Until you sign on the line you are not making a commitment to either. When they both come back with an offer, just go with the one that pays more.

Backing out of a perm appointment can only *help* your work life.

I have interviewed with almost everyone in the department and they seem nice. Besides, I just really want to get into that field... and I am pretty sure the paid will be better than what my current place can offer.

So, I can't wait to hear back from them !
