Since MTV was brought up... Those in the Conan O'brien demographic are more likely to watch MTV than the Leno audience or Letterman audience for that matter.
I like Leno and I've never even seen American Idol or Dancing with the Stars. Maybe some people just have a different sense of humor than you do.
You know Kimmel is not all that bad, it's just that his time slot is very unusual and out of place.. I would always tune into Kimmel by accident...
Bravo, I think, used to re-run ancient Letterman NBC reruns. What's funny is that Leno was one of Letterman's most frequent guests. They were at one point friends. And in those years, Leno was a hack, but wasn't nearly as much of one, so either Leno consciously chose to tailor his comedy to appeal to the widest possible audience to get the Tonight Show, or else he somehow lost (or merely sold off) the ability to be funny. Like a muscle long since atrophied, it doesn't seem like Leno will ever get it back. (His hot daughter, genetically potentially also a genius, is now on SNL too.) Here he does his Leno impression. (I'm pretty sure this predates by many years the Leno-Letterman Tonight Show succession feud, and was just to kill time.)
I don't think Jay Leno is supposed to be funny. He's supposed to make old, senile people feel safe with their flaccid penis' by providing safe, mundane "humor". Once again the American people are looking to identify with a short, bumbling character instead of looking for actual quality. The theme of this nation.
Jay is Pwnd everybody. This is even better than I expected. What a great first segment. Cheaters, hahaha.
Good point. So is this phenomenon unique to America, as opposed to other first-world countries? If so, what makes our "ordinary folks" different from the ordinary folks in other developed countries?
What's with all the hate towards Jay Leno? He is the Don of late night and he has the power to hire the best comics in the business to work on his show... Jim Norton is one of them..
I could see NBC pulling the plug on this if the ratings don't justify the cost. Remember, ratings expectations for 10:00 EST are MUCH different than ratings expectations for 11:35 EST. Jay will be going up against the CSI's, Grey's Anatomy's, and whatever other 9pm hit drama that debuts this year (there wil be at least one... always is). This is a much bigger gamble than people are realizing... to put Jay in a primetime slot every single day is like telling a future HOFer on the tail-end of his career to start playing every minute of every game, and take extra reps in practice.
Appreciation of quality and fine arts, as well as acknowledgment of excellence. This phenomenon is most definitely unique to America, I actually created a thread about why players with Kobe's attitude are detested in America yet adored in Europe, Asia, etc. America can't appreciate something it can't understand or identify with, it's a defense mechanism that stems from a lack of culture or interest in things outside of their safety bubble.
Blasphemy. The Tonight Show will always be linked with Johnny Carson, not this so called "Don of Late Night" you speak of. I for one am actually hoping Leno fails. Not only banking on it, but hoping for it. he is taking away good scripted drama from the industry...
i think the real phenomenon unique to america is incredibly broad overgeneralizations like the one you just made about America. i don't know if you noticed, but kobe is not detested by america; he's idolized. he gets paid millions of dollars to do what he does, and he has a lot of fans who love him for doing it. sure he has his haters, and more than a few of them unsurprisingly hang out in this forum, but it's misguided to think that america in general detests kobe, or that his detractors only exist domestically. you'll find plenty of people in europe and asia who don't appreciate kobe's attitude, just like you'll find plenty of people in america who worship him. you don't like jay leno's humor, fine. you don't need to paint inaccurate (and condescending) generalizations about uncultured americans who are incapable of appreciating excellence to make that point.
Jeeze, this is so freaking uncomfortable and I want to cringe like a mofo. "I need to take some time off to reevaluate myself" is the new rehab.
