Miles has many things this KID does not have.
    The most important being:
#1-Defense. Miles is a defensive monster, shotblocking, steals, etc. He has VERY long arms to help him.
#2-Ball handling. I didn't see any advertisement for his PG skills.
#3-Attitude. I got the impression this kid had not the slightest bit of humbleness. While I'm all for a little cockiness (a la Dan Langhi) he's got way too much of it. And what was with his dad? Tiger Woods Part II, basketball style?

It also didn't mention SCORING skills. If he was averaging 30 ppg, they would've said so. Just dunking. Dunking, dunking, dunking. If I'm making a team and one guy can do nothing but flashy dunks, and the other nothing but shoot, I'll take the shooter. The Matt Bullards tend to stick around, while the Harold Miners, don't.

I'm not even quite sure this is in this forum, or why we're even planning on tanking so we can get another Chris Porter in 2-4 years.

I liked the guys dunks. He puts on a good show. He'll always have a spot on the Harlem Globe Trotters.

When I see that he can shoot and play defense, then I'll be impressed. For now, I'm content with being interested.

    Jerin,

Didn't you say you'd never post to this board again or something? [IMG]

I hear ya man. All I'm saying is that there are several high school players that average ridiculous numbers that don't get anywhere. There are several people with great athleticism that don't get anywhere in pro sports. Who knows, James White may end up being the next Michael Jordan. I just think it's a wee bit early to start talking about things like that.

As a comparison, coming out of high school, Randy Livingston was the next Michael Jordan. He was rated higher than Jason Kidd in many publications and by many scouts. Unfortunately, and probably due to his knee injuries, he hasn't done much of anything in the NBA.

    Frosty,

I agree that athleticism can be a key to success, but at the same time, how athletic was Larry Bird? Magic was just a freak of nature, but you didn't see him skying for dunks right and left. Hell, the entire Boston Celtics team of the early 80's was comprised of non-athletic earth-bound creatures that just knew how to play basketball and execute. Everybody talks about the Lakers fastbreak being incredible, but hey, the Celtics fastbreak was probably the 2nd best and they had nothing but sluggish-looking monsters like McHale and Parrish running on it. Who on the Lakers championship teams of note displayed incredible dunking skills and the ability to take off from the free throw line to do it? If these players didn't have those skills and became some of the greatest teams of all time, why do you necessarily equate athleticism with greatness? Greatness is achieved by skill and winning, not by vertical leap measurements (ask Bill Willoughby).

I think in another thread I posted that Kevin Willis bench pressed over 400 pounds and ran the mile in about 4.5 minutes. Now if you ask me, that's more impressive than dunking from the FT line. I mean come on, a 7 footer that weighs 240-250 pounds, is chiseled out of stone, and runs a near-4-minute mile. You've GOTTA be kidding! Kevin's had a solid NBA career, but he's not the Second Coming, is he?

Like I said, maybe James White will be the next Michael Jordan. But I bet there are several James Whites out on the playground right now doing some amazing things that we'll never hear about.

    dod,
for starters, i came out of retirement becuz playin golf all damn day sucked. [IMG] i hear exactly what youre sayin. but what im sayin is that this is a guy with superstar POTENTIAL at an astoundingly young age, who we should try to keep up with. Who knows if this is the second coming of Harold Minor or if this is the second coming of Vince Carter? Nobody can say, but at such a young age, to possess SO MUCH athletic ability, and along with that a game that has been in the making be4 this guy was even conceived, it has to get you to keep those eyes open. Yes tanking right now is crazy talk, but if this guy continues to progress as a player, and maybe even plays a little bit of college ball, whos to say he wont be a lottery pick? How refined was carters game when he was ending his UNC career? This guy is a lot younger than that Carter, and arguably has the same level of skill that he did. Hes been playing higher level basketball for a while now, (ie- 12yr old playing 15 yr olds)(by the way, 3 yrs at that young of an age is A LOT), so he has to have some talent. Of course they didnt bring up all of his scoring numbers, the whole point of the story was to shed light on his athleticsm. On the reply to Alaskansnowman , it is completely irrelevant to bring up bird and magic. they are completely different types of players, and did great things. They depended on that raw talent that is completely jaw-dropping. But other players depend on other things. Shaq- size, Dream- footwork(God bless him!), and once again Carter- Sheer Athleticsm. This guy has a ways to go, but if he puts his heart into it, he will be special. I think that snow and i agree. i also think that dod sees what we're sayin but is still really skeptical. I cant speak for him, but i am too. So hopefully this guy will turn into the player im hoping he will be, and he somehow gets handed over to the rockets. [IMG] BTW, if ure still reading this.......?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?! [IMG] [IMG]

Good post Snow and GQ, i mean, jerin. White really has some potential and he has everything necessary to be the next jordan or carter.

I found some more on White:

James White has put himself among the elite players in HS basketball with his high rise act and by showing that he is more than just a stellar athlete but a great basketball player to boot. James uses his 40+ inch verticle to soar over bigger opponents for rebounds and putbacks. He also has exceptional quickness to get out on the break and can finish with authority. His perimiter game (dribbling and outside shooting) has been improving dramatically. Watch out for this high riser as he will be coming soon to a TV set near you. Brick Oettinger of the Sporting News has dubbed him the "Gerald Wallace of the class of 2001".

Also, he is a senior this year.
