Just found out he died this past year. Like most people, I only remember him from the horrible performance in the V.P. debate in 1992. I had never read or heard anything else about him until today. From the New York Times (reg. required): Apparently, he became president of The Citadel after his release, but quit after his attempts to curb hazing were rebuffed. He said, "When you've been tortured by professionals, you do not have to put up with amateurs." Anyway, I thought it was interesting and wanted to share.
I was like you until a friend of mine read a book about Stockdale 4-5 years ago and told me about it. It's very sad the way most people will remember him.
