anybody know of any restaurants in houston that makes a good one? I ate at Hog Island Deli in Austin recently, which was unbelievable (www.hogislanddeli.com), and have been craving them since.
The place I love for any kind of sandwiches in Austin is a honey ham place on 38th a block or so past lamar going west. The chicken salad is awesome. It's by Teo's the gelato place and I think a Waterloo restaurant. They have a nice wooden patio out front with a fireplace (when its cold).
I went to a place called Jersey Mike's Subs about a week ago and was pretty surprised by it. There are a couple on Westheimer and one on Kirby.
Ugh, i went to Jersey Mikes on Wilcrest and Westheimer when they first opened up. It was quite possibly the worst sub I've ever eaten. The bread was not soft, and the rest of it was just bland as hell. It looked like one of those commercial spoofs in which they make fun of Subway. The best subs I've had have been at Jimmy Johns in Austin. If they opened one in Houston, I would be there every 3rd day.
I went to the one on Westheimer closer to the Galleria. No problems with the bread, and I thought it was quite tasty.
How about Mah-rio! Mah-rio! Mah-rio! Your new Houston Texan DE has worked as a Sandwich Artist for years at a Subway near school.
Do you mean "not soft" as in stale.... ....or do you mean that you are part of the market that dictates why its almost impossible to find decent bread in Houston?
A food thread...time for me to "weigh" in... Jersey Mikes on Kirby is tasty, but that is the only one in town I have been to. Other places for decent Italian subs in Houston..... Auntie Pasto's (Bellaire Blvd. & Chimney Rock) New York Pizzeria (several locations...I like the one on Beechnut) Fuzzy's Pizza (in the Village) Paulie's (the original one in Montrose...I don't like the one in the Med Center) I have also heard great things from friends of mine about a place called Rocky's Subs. It is out on Greens Road, west of I-45, just past Greenspoint Mall. I have never been there myself, but friends of mine who live in that area rave about the place.
you like day old bread?? I don't think that my liking soft bread, has led to the direct demise of sandwich sub culture in this country. Or maybe it has. Care to explain?
My little sister who goes to school in Dallas saw that Jersey Mike's on Willcrest as and was going on and on about how great they are so we went and it was awful.
I hate eating stale bread (unless it is turned into croutons or bread pudding).....which is why I first asked if that was what you were talking about. I do, however, like good bread, and the best sandwich breads I've ever had have been anything but soft. When I think of great sandwiches and great bread, the first two cities that leap to mind are Paris and New York. They sell these awesome sandwiches in Paris all over the place, and you see people every day walking around and eating them at lunchtime. One of their versions of fast food, I guess. Those sandwiches are made on sandwich-size baguettes. The baguette was invented specifically to give people the absolute most quantity of crust. Those breads can be tough enough to make your jaw sore if you eat enough of it. I realize that may not appeal to American sensibilities (at least down here in the South), and I don't begrudge you your soft bread......I just can't stand the fact that its nearly impossible for me to find bread in Houston like I can in Paris or NYC.
Have you tried the LaBrea Bakery breads at Rice Epicurean, or the breads at Central Market? There are also a couple of Vietnamese-run French bakeries in Little Saigon that make good French breads. But I do agree with you that good bread is harder to find in Houston than it is in NYC or elsewhere.
I have, and I do enjoy the breads at several of the Vietnamese/French bakeries (as well as some of Central Markets breads), but none of them are convenient enough for me to get more than say....once a week, and still........none of them are....just....quite....right.
There is this place in Clear Lake on Highway 3 called Antonini's Subs & Steaks. They have the best subs in Houston. The bread is fresh and they give you a lot of meat.
I ate Jimmy John's when I worked in Indianapolis and that place is the shiznit. I loved their sammiches and would eat them a couple of times a week mostly because they delivered. The last thing I wanted to do was go walking all over downtown in the snow just to get some lunch. There was also a hole in the wall called Eh! Formaggio's right by Conseco Fieldhouse. Awesome pizza, pasta, and sandwiches. The guy that owned was a CIA chef and everything was made fresh daily, even the cheese. Man, I miss that food.
